Iowa scientists: Drought a sign of climate change

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? This year's drought is consistent with predictions that global climate change would bring about weather extremes including more frequent droughts, said a report released Monday.

The Iowa Climate Statement updates the 2010 report, reflecting the year's lingering drought and the belief that it signifies what many scientists have predicted ? increasing instability in weather patterns will lead to extremes during both wet and dry years.

Iowa has experienced such extremes in recent years; in 2008, flooding caused an estimated $10 billion in damage, making it the worst disaster in the state's history.

More broadly, this year's drought brought about parched croplands, reducing corn yields across the nation's Grain Belt, from South Dakota to Indiana. And last month's Superstorm Sandy ? a combination of a hurricane, a wintry storm and a blast of arctic air ? devastated parts of the Eastern seaboard and killed more than 100 people.

The report was signed by 138 scientists and researchers from 27 Iowa colleges and universities. They said they wanted to release the updated report now while the drought is still fresh in the public's mind.

"The drought is sort of a teachable moment," said Jerry Schnoor, co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research at the University of Iowa.

The scientists are careful to avoid saying any single extreme weather incident is directly caused by global warming, saying too many factors are at play when it comes to weather. But, they did say increasingly volatile weather patterns have been predicted by scientists who study global warming.

Patrick Michaels, director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Washington-based conservative think tank Cato Institute, said there's no evidence global warming contributed to this summer's drought. He doesn't deny that global warming is real and that man-made pollutants may contribute to it, but says it has a very small impact overall.

Michaels said the scientists who signed on to the report are "nibbling around the edges" with their recommendations that Americans use more renewable energy sources, such as wind power and ethanol, and build homes to be more efficient. He says any action the United States takes wouldn't be that effective because China and India are emitting increasing amounts of pollutants that contribute to global warming.

The Iowa scientists said they're statement is not one of gloom and doom, but meant to indicate investments can be made now to slow the economic impact of weather extremes and to help communities adapt to the changes.

One scientist who helped draft the report, Dave Courard-Hauri, chairman of environmental science and policy program at Drake University, said continuing to deny the connection between increased storm volatility and a warming climate helps no one.

"We gain nothing if we act as if there's uncertainty where there's not or that there is significant division among scientists regarding the causes of climate change," he said.

Judge says celebrity marriages are bad role model - Marilyn Stowe ...

I very much enjoyed reading this weekend about the marriage of two of my favourite TV celebrities David Mitchell to Victoria Coren. I loved the photos and thought her dress was gorgeous. Equally well-known brother Giles Coren, who writes amusingly in The Times of his own marriage and newly arrived child with another on the way, gave her away. ?David Mitchell tweeted his followers (of which I am one) about how blissfully happy he is. So I had a wry smile, when in the same newspaper yesterday I read a thunderous warning about the perils of emulating celebrity marriage, from a High Court Judge.

Are celebrity marriages more prone to fail than the relationships of us more ordinary folk? Mr Justice Coleridge appears to believe so, and said that young people should not try to emulate the marriages of the rich and famous because they are ?even less able to sustain long-term healthy relationships than the rest of us?.

Earlier this year Sir Paul Coleridge set up the Marriage Foundation, a group dedicated to the promotion of long term relationships within marriage. It has just published a report claiming that celebrity marriages are twice as likely to end in divorce as the rest of us ? the divorce rate over a ten year period is 40 per cent compared to only 20 per cent for non-celebrities. The report was based on the outcomes of 572 high profile celebrity weddings which have taken place since 2000. One in ten of the marriages were over within two years.

The judge, who was a family law barrister for 30 years before becoming a high court judge 12 years ago, said in his introduction to the report:

?The worrying feature of these statistics is the picture they paint to those who regard the celebrity lifestyle as something to be admired and copied for its own sake. These are, after all, the role models upon which many, especially young people, fashion their lives. Aspiration for happiness built on celebrity lifestyle is, it seems, dangerously flawed.?

For heaven?s sake! This is such a negative ?perspective! Marriage is an exciting commitment for all of us and it can work. The Beckhams, one of the most celebrated couples on the planet seem to be doing all right along with plenty of other celebrity couples who are still married despite living lives in a virtual goldfish bowl with all manner of temptation around them. Only today for instance, David Walliams and his wife Lara Stone announced they are happily expecting a child.

By all means, as I have done on many occasions in the past, criticise high profile couples who live together without ever actually tying the knot. Surely it is they who are perpetuating the myth about common law marriage and misleading people into thinking cohabitation is a glamorous, settled and viable alternative to traditional marriage.

The reality in law, which does not come across in glossy magazines, is that living together creates absolutely no legal relationship or rights under English and Welsh law. And with it often comes disaster if the relationship breaks down and the poorer party (usually the woman) has no job, no home, no pension or income of her own and faces penury.

But as to marriage, why shouldn?t the weddings of the rich and famous be shared with us to enjoy? Doesn?t every bride dream that one day, she too will have her own dream day? And don?t magazines like Hello! or OK! sell millions of copies round the world precisely because they know we all like to share close up in the happiness of famous (often royal) couples getting married ? I just cant see what?s wrong with it.

Notwithstanding the fact that most couples are now choosing to live together than ever before, and the numbers of couples marrying is dropping like a stone, Mr Justice Coleridge is still unhappy that visions of celebrities leading an ?idealised life? create ??a false expectation within the participants that in some way their relationships will be better, easier and, above all, more exciting than the average.?

We aren?t that daft surely? The statistics suggest anything but.

Aren?t celebrities who choose to share their weddings across the magazine pages rather?sending a message to their audiences and readers that marriage is still something special, something to be aspired to? That even though it?s so much easier not to commit, that love deserves to celebrated by marrying?

And isn?t celebrating marriage precisely what the Marriage Foundation was set up to do?

Meanwhile of course, Royal Weddings are the most hyped of all. The billions who tuned in to watch the wedding of William and Kate are testimony to that. How we loved the glamour of such a spectacular wedding, the beautiful dress, the stunning church and glamorous guests. And is there anyone who doesn?t remember the newly weds waving gaily to the crowds of cheering well wishers who thronged the Mall as they began their married life together in the vintage Aston Martin? Romantic? Certainly. Beyond our own reach? Absolutely . Will it last? Who knows?

Does anyone, celebrity or not,?ever know whether their marriage will last when they get married?

My husband and I watched Charles and Diana get married in 1981. We sat together on our settee, watching it on television, thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. At that time, that wedding too was the most hyped on the planet and it delivered in magnificent style. ?Emulating the royal couple later that afternoon, we went to a local hotel and booked our own wedding!

The glamour of that royal wedding day had without doubt?encouraged us to get married. It had sent the most positive messages to us; and although tragedy engulfed the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales, I am pleased to say, 30 odd years later, we are still married.

Investors Remain Optimistic in the Face of Declining Stock Market ...

Last weekend, I said that risk assets were getting frothy, and showed that speculation was rampant in several financial sectors. ?I also pointed out that essentially the entirety of the total return to investors for several years, and perhaps for several decades, might be able to be explained by the appreciation in price (decline in yield) of the Treasury bond complex. ?I noted how surprising it was that especially in recent years, the ongoing bull market in Treasury bond prices has been a virtual secret, with media attention going to stocks, gold, etc., even though Treasuries have been the top performing major asset since 1980 on most time frames. ?

This past week, Treasurys rose in price a bit (declined in yield) all across the yield spectrum from two years through the long bond (30 year duration). ?In the past month, the difference in yield between the 2-year T-note and the 10-year T-note has shrunk by 24 basis points to a recessionary level of about 133 basis points (1.33%). ?The fact that the Fed is selling short-term Treasurys, including the 2-year note to buy the long bond suggests that natural as well as Fed-induced forces are bringing rates down. ?One can look more or less in vain for headlines about how much money investors in TLT and EDV are making (Treasury bond funds that trade in the stock market).

Also last week, stocks took a hit. ?Normally, the financial media makes sure to promote whatever is hot, because people like to jump aboard appreciating assets. ?Don?t hold your breath, though, about the media pumping the T-bond the way it pumps assets that make more money for the financial industry. It hasn?t happened recently, and it?s not happening yet.

As an example, the latest Barron?s front page features the ?sexy? smartphone battle between Samsung and that great attention-getter, Apple. ?Great company though Apple is (and I own a smallish position in it), it is a risk asset. ?Barron?s is pumping the upside to the stock, even though analysts have steadily been lowering earnings estimates both for FY 2013 and FY 2014, which is typically a danger sign. ?Almost every analyst is publicly bullish on AAPL, there is only a minimal amount of skepticism on the stock as judged by short interest, and put-call options measures of the stock reflect relatively large optimism. ?Meanwhile, the stock is considered a bargain because it is way off its high? but it?s still up about 30% this calendar year and more than that over the past 12 months. ?A bull on AAPL might be better off not seeing a bullish article but instead seeing a picture of a bruised, fallen rotting apple. ?That would be capitulation! ?Yet the article teases the reader that AAPL, last trading around $527, may go to? $800. ?As if Wall Street, which is scrambling to earn little bits of interest income, is going to leave an obvious bargain with 50% upside plus a 2% dividend yield just lying around for the public to get rich on simply by reading a Barron?s article!?

Despite economic data suggesting recessionary forces at work regardless of precisely what policies Washington comes up with, stock traders continue to be upbeat.

The NASDAQ is down about 2% in the past week and 8% in the past month. ?A measure of optimism-pessimism is the volatility skew, and for both the ?NAZ? and the S&P 500, these measures have stayed steadfastly on the optimistic side. ?In contrast, during the sell-off this spring, these indices reflected fear. ?Investor?s Intelligence still shows 53% bulls amongst newsletter writers, about 10% higher than during the spring sell-off and up from 20% bulls during the important stock market bottom in the late summer and early fall of 2011. ?

The Federal Reserve reported on October?s industrial production (I.P.) this past Friday. ?This report also provides long-term charts on industrial production, linked to HERE.??Those on pages 5 and 7 are interesting. ?Those on page 5 show a picture of declining vigor over the decades, and shows the downtrend in I.P. that began several months ago. ?On page 7, one can see that the year-on-year growth of industrial output has been decreasing down to the same level, about 2%, where the recent ?Great Recession? began. ?It is a few points below the level at which the Great Recession of its time, the 1973-5 monster, began. ?The period in which a recession begins is a dangerous one for stock market investors, because they have now experienced several years of strong stock markets, and the economy has survived recession scares year after year.

While Barron?s draws the public?s attention to the great bull market star of AAPL, it does not give a lot of attention to the NYSE Composite Index, which has hardly moved up from its post-crash early 2010 peak in the past 2 1/2 years. ?Meanwhile, the massive bull market in the fixed income category has gone largely unnoticed, and it is that bull market which has made the paltry 2% yield on the S&P 500 look enticing.

Regional Federal Reserve Banks find persistent optimism for a better future six months forward than companies see currently. ?This has been the case for over a decade. ?One of the latest examples comes from this past week?s Empire State Manufacturing Survey. ?Respondents indicated that more companies are firing personnel than hiring, and that of those ongoing employees, work weeks are beginning to be shortened. ?Fewer workers working shorter hours. ?Plus, the trend for new orders has been flat-to-down for six straight months, and the general assessment of business conditions has been negative for four straight months (so it?s not Sandy?s fault). ?Yet the CEOs surveyed are resolutely upbeat about the future. ?

This phenomenon may be relevant to the under-performance of stocks and the general economy since then. ?Perhaps aggressive Fed ?stimulus? has led to over-optimism, thus leading to misjudging the future pace of economic action? ?Perhaps media cheerleading has played an effect? ?In the Clinton years, the limited data available from the same surveys does not show much difference between the assessment of current conditions versus outlook six month?s hence. ?

In any case, there is now a distinct complacency about the economy despite obvious downtrends in growth (or actual declines) in industrial production, real retail sales, real disposable income, and exports. ?This is reflected (one more indicator) in the ?fear index? VIX, which bullishly moved sharply down on the week to the lowest level in one month. ?(Note: ?lower VIX correlates with less anxiety about the future; usually the VIX index rises when stock prices drop.

To long-term investors, what happens to securities prices in the short term is of almost no interest. ?The basic fact is that if one buys ?the market? as in the SPY ETF which tracks the S&P 500 index, then one year from now, one will have received about $2 back in dividends for every $100 invested. ?If a recession turns out to be ongoing now or begins relatively soon, one is investing despite the fact that the average post-WW II recession has been associated with a 30% drop in stock prices from peak to trough. ?Similar reasoning applies if a recession strikes within a 2-year time frame, unless stock prices soar in the interim or the recession is associated with an atypically mild stock market downturn.

In the entire history of the United States and also in the post-WW II period, a recession has begun about every five years. ?It is now almost five years since the onset of the ?Great Recession?.

Thus it is unclear why faith should prevail over precedent. ?

Anything could happen, and more than usual in this world of central bank intervention in markets I mean anything,?so my main point once again is to argue for a cautious strategy, as I have been advocating for some time.

Addendum: ?Much of this post has to do with volatility, and the markets? tendency to bet on low volatility (to be bullish) for stocks even as they act bearishly. ?After completing the above, I came across this article on volatility by the redoubtable Nassim Nicholas Taleb from Saturday?s WSJ. ?Enjoy.

Semper fi? Some spouses wonder if infidelity is yet another hazard of military life

WASHINGTON ? ?I have no words, no questions,? Penelope proclaims after seeing her husband, Odysseus, for the first time in 20 years, after he has made his way home from fighting in the Trojan War. ?If it really is Odysseus, and he is home, we will recognize each other well enough; there are secrets that we two know and no one else.?

Amen, sister.

As a military wife who has watched my husband come and go from multiple long deployments (this century?s eight-to-12 month variety), I share Penelope?s understanding of spousal intimacy. It?s not the actual physical cheating I worry about; it?s that distance will erode the sense that it?s the two of us against the world, or that the intense new experiences that inevitably result from war will intrude on the feeling that we are co-conspirators in life.

I?m not alone in that concern. Though military spouses (including me) are careful not to speak of the Petraeus family specifically, because of the strong impulse to protect Holly Petraeus from further pain (many in the community know her personally, others have benefited from her advocacy work, and the rest feel that she?s part of their ?military family?), the recent headlines have prompted a quiet discussion in military-spouse circles about whether infidelity is a hazard of military life.

?I never saw it coming,? one friend told me after discovering that her husband had multiple affairs during a series of deployments, and who has stayed in the marriage. ?But in the military, you?re given more opportunities for infidelity, and there are more stresses, which lead to bad choices. You?ve got the distance, you?ve got the long hours, you?ve got the drinking. There?s always a temptation. I?m not stupid, and my husband is a pretty good guy. So what about all the schmucks??

Good question. Most military spouses I?ve heard from in the past week say plainly that marriage is hard regardless of the circumstances, but that the military environment seems to exacerbate the normal tensions that any couple might face, whether they involve money, raising the kids or extracurricular sexual activities.

Those who have experienced a spouse?s cheating tend to think it?s as contagious as the plague, like the friend quoted above, who feels like ?the culture of the military contributed to the problem.? Others believe it?s a ?man? problem rather than a ?military? problem. As another military spouse told me, pointedly, ?Infidelity is a hazard of life? ? not military life.

Who?s right? I called Kayt Sukel, the author of ?Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationships,? and a former Army spouse, to get her take. During her years as an Army wife on a military base in Germany, she led her unit?s family readiness group, a command-sponsored organization of family members that provides support, outreach and information. Here, she learned the concept of the ?home team/away team? ? meant to refer to American troops who are married to women in the United States but who also have common-law wives and children at their overseas post.

?Any sort of high-stress life that takes you away from your primary partner for months at a time presents a risk,? she says, ?and falling in love affects your judgment. So it doesn?t surprise me that (the officers in the headlines) weren?t acting as discreetly as they should.?

Sukel doesn?t blame the impulse to seek comfort outside of marriage on the military, but believes that military norms may inadvertently support the behavior because ?people keep each other?s secrets. You can?t talk about where you?re going or what your mission is; you?ve sworn not to reveal your whereabouts or your schedule. You trust the guys in your unit, you?re not going to let anything operational slip, and you?re not going to let anything else slip, either.?

Still, infidelity cannot be explained away, says military spouse and author Jacey Eckhart, who posted to a military.com blog for spouses last week:

One of the results of the Petraeus admissions is that the question of fidelity between military couples rears its ugly head. I cannot bear all of the shrugging off of fidelity I have heard this weekend, as if infidelity for military couples is the logical result of spending so much time apart. . . . The thought that we should expect a little cheatage to come our way simply because we spend too much time apart is a poison in our culture. Infidelity is not acceptable. It is not inevitable. Faithfulness is not too much to ask for military couples. In fact, I think that it is because our military lives are so demanding on both the service member and the spouse that faithfulness is required of each of us. Every day. All the time. Physically. Emotionally. Financially.

I?m all for faithfulness. But should its absence merit criminal action, as it does for service members under the Uniform Code of Military Justice?

Another military wife I know, who has thought long and hard about infidelity after her husband admitted to several affairs on overseas assignments, thinks yes, telling me that ?the military has a moral responsibility to spouses to enforce rules forbidding adultery. (The service member?s wife) is literally at the mercy of the military commanders and puts her faith and trust in both her soldier and in the soldiers responsible for him to ensure that her own interests are being looked after.?

But there?s a wary undertone to these discussions because few military spouses believe that adultery is worthy of the tabloid-like headlines it has received during the last few days, particularly if there are no national security issues at stake. Many military spouses feel that the avalanche of media interest in the Petraeus affair is disingenuous at best ? at worst, prurient with a pinch of schadenfreude.

Not only do none of us want our marriage parsed by others, but we hear the profound truth in the Onion?s recent headline, ?Nation Horrified to Learn About War in Afghanistan While Reading Up On Petraeus Sex Scandal.? Ten years of combat, and this is what grabs America?s attention?

As a military spouse, I wish the spotlight would fall on the real tragedies and crises military families face every day. They don?t require FBI investigations or White House notification. Simply drive down the main road at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. (or any local VA hospital), where a young man whose body consists of a head and a torso blows into a straw to steer himself through the crosswalk on the way into the hospital.

This is where the reporters should be. Stop by the base post office, where a young man, face down on a stretcher, waits in a line for his mail. Step over to Dunkin Donuts, where another young man with four prosthetic limbs attempts to hand the cashier a $5 bill, which keeps slipping out of his metal claw. Pass a young veteran in a wheelchair trying to push his infant?s stroller with one hand while wheeling himself forward with the other.

In this city of amputees, and in the scores of American towns that will house and attempt to heal them for decades to come, the dirtiest secret of wartime is already out in the open, for everyone to see.

Alison Buckholtz is the author of ?Standing By: The Making of an American Military Family in a Time of War? (Tarcher/Penguin 2009), which will be released in paperback this spring with a new afterword and reader?s guide. She wrote this for Slate.

Las Vegas: World's Friendliest Destination Las Vegas Gambling

Finding reasonably priced food in Las Vegas is not that complex to do. Cheap dining by no means indicates a lack of quality. Even though it can not be as sophisticated since some offerings, you might find that greatly of the cheaper places to eat actually have far superior flavor to loads of of the more expensive dining experiences and it?s just nice to get away from buffet food once in an even if during your Vegas stay. You can only endure so countless buffets before they all commence looking, & tasting just alike.

You will find so a tremendous deal to do in Las Vegas. There will be a large amount of free things to do. The art work at the Venetian Hotel has been quite worthwhile to see. The ceilings are painted with intricate designs. The lobby floor is exceptionally eye catching since it?s an optical illusion. The second floor also has paintings in the ceilings that make you feel like you will be in one of the churches in Italy. If you head to the second floor, you may also go to their Grand Canal Shoppes. They have serenading gondoliers, street performers, and living statues. You may get a feel for old Italy here.

If you never outgrew an adore of magic or if you?ve children of your own that you are hoping to introduce to the wonderment that illusion also can bring then Lance Burton, Master Magician has just the show for you to see. He performs at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Tuesday through Saturday. After you?ve seen the show, be sure to enjoy the magic of the Monte Carlo.

Cirque du Soleil?s Mystere started in Montreal since a circus show. They show countless wondrous feats of human agility & strength. This production showcases 1 amazing feat after another using contortionists, acrobats, and some aerial tricks. You can also bring your children to this 1, if for no other reason, to see the giant snail. This 1 has been shown at Treasure Island that?s right next door to the Mirage. The showrooms for all three shows have state of the art music and sound systems. The budget on these shows are astronomical for the reason that they have to pay for lighting, costumes, sets, & exceptionally high-tech special effects. They are a wonder to keep watch over & you will wish to go back again.

Do not forget to watch the latest art muzeums in las Vegas. There will be some galleries and some work spaces for local artists. A different kind of art is found at the Guggenheim/Hermitage Museum at the Venetian. This is modern art form and has one of the best encyclopedic collections in the world. Most of the artwork has been about modern pop icons. This is a co-venture between St. Petersburg in Russia and the Guggenheim Museum.

The Circus Circus is a tremendous place to stay extremely if you brought the kids. This hotel has to a great extent to offer such for the reason that the circus acts and the Adventuredome and Midway. The Adventuredome is located on the second floor & has been an amusement park filled with all kinds of rides, a mini golf game, & its own roller coaster. The midway also located on the second floor has dozens of video games & simulators. Both of these attractions will be for kids & adults. There is a wedding chapel on the third floor & the circus acts perform right over the casino floors. So if you are waiting on the kids from the park, you may also keep watch over these acts as you play the slots or blackjack. Rooms at this hotel run $59 a night.

Looking for other pleasurable things to do in Las Vegas? If you?re old enough to take into account the commercials that asked if it was live or it was Memorex then you?ll understand that reference when it comes to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. Where else also can you play a round of golf with Tiger, sail the seas with Captain Jack Sparrow, marry George Clooney, become a playboy bunny, and sing along side The King? You?ll see some of Hollywood?s brightest stars both living & living memories at Madame Tussauds have fun meeting your favorites. This has been a must see stop on your trip to Vegas & will have the entire family rolling with laughter, be sure to bring the camera along for this one.Vegas might have been a little slow to see the light, but this city is really working to make this a fun put to be for the entire family and it?s little by little building a nice selection of activities that don?t directly involve gambling or the casinos. The casinos, recognizing helpful business sense when they see it have been the pioneers of loads of of these family oriented activities in hopes of positive more guests to come back to the city. Be sure to check out all the wonderfully fun things there?s to do with the family during your Vegas stay.

The Hard Rock is the choice for the younger party crowd. It has underwater music, a hair salon, a spa, & swim up blackjack. The poolside cabanas are nice grass shacks and comprise refrigerators, phones, and misting systems.

For a little more magic, the Rick Thomas show at the Stardust Hotel has a little bit of magic for everyone. From the exquisitely choreographed moves & the aid of a few showgirl type dancers he has created one of the finest daytime shows in Vegas. Not only is Rick Thomas an terrific magician and illusionist he is also an exceptionally talented showman. & anything that could perhaps keep the rapt attention of little ones (in addition to their quiet) is a really useful thing although on vacation. You can catch his show Thursday through Tuesday at 2 & 4 pm in the Wayne Newton Theatre of the Stardust Hotel.

If you are in the market for a Vegas show it is suggested that you book around the time or at the same time you book your hotel reservations in order to be sure you might also get the tickets. Lots of of these shows sell out months in advance & for months at a time. The more popular the show the bigger price the tickets will demand & the bigger following the shows will have.

In order to avoid things like this set a vibration alarm on your cell phone & have it buzz you when it?s time to go. Only bring in a guaranteed quantity of cash into the casino & when that is gone it is gone. don?t go back to the room & get more money or make expensive trips to the ATM. Those trips will suddenly add up & find you with no true idea of how a large amount money you have spent or have left in your bank account.

Mr. Crowley alleges that the Manager of the Lady Luck Casino Marquette broke into his house for modified dice patterns. Obama: Historic Myanmar visit is sign of progress

Since colonial times, the fight for change in Myanmar has begun on this leafy campus. It was a center of the struggle for independence against Britain and served as a launching point for pro-democracy protests in 1962, 1974, 1988 and 1996. For many, the school has today become a symbol of the country?s ruined education system and a monument to a half century of misrule. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe)

(AP) ? On the eve of his landmark trip to Myanmar, President Barack Obama tried to assure critics that his visit was not a premature reward for a long-isolated nation still easing its way toward democracy.

"This is not an endorsement of the government," Obama said Sunday in Thailand as he opened a three-county dash through Asia. "This is an acknowledgement that there is a process under way inside that country that even a year and a half, two years ago, nobody foresaw."

Obama was set to become the first U.S. president to visit Myanmar with Air Force One scheduled to touch down in Yangon on Monday morning. Though Obama planned to spend just six hours in the country, the much-anticipated stop came as the result of a remarkable turnaround in the countries' relationship.

The president's Asia tour also marks his formal return to the world stage after months mired in a bruising re-election campaign. For his first postelection trip, he tellingly settled on Asia, a region he has deemed the region as crucial to U.S. prosperity and security.

Aides say Asia will factor heavily in Obama's second term as the U.S. seeks to expand its influence in an attempt to counter China.

China's rise is also at play in Myanmar, which long has aligned itself with Beijing. But some in Myanmar fear that China is taking advantage of its wealth of natural resources, so the country is looking for other partners to help build its nascent economy.

Obama has rewarded Myanmar's rapid adoption of democratic reforms by lifting some economic penalties. The president has appointed a permanent ambassador to the country, also known as Burma, and pledged greater investment if Myanmar continues to progress following a half-century of military rule.

But some human rights groups say Myanmar's government, which continues to hold hundreds of political prisoners and is struggling to contain ethnic violence, hasn't done enough to earn a personal visit from Obama.

Speaking from neighboring Thailand, Obama said Sunday he was under no illusions that Myanmar had done all it needed to do. But he said the U.S. could play a critical role in helping ensure the country doesn't slip backward.

"I'm not somebody who thinks that the United States should stand on the sidelines and not want to get its hands dirty when there's an opportunity for us to encourage the better impulses inside a country," Obama said during a news conference with Thailand's prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Even as Obama turned his sights on Asia, widening violence in the Middle East competed for his attention.

Obama said Israel had the right to defend itself against Hamas' missile attacks from Gaza. But he urged Israel not to launch a ground assault in Gaza, saying it would put Israeli soldiers, as well as Palestinian citizens, at greater risk and hamper an already vexing peace process.

"If we see a further escalation of the situation in Gaza, the likelihood of us getting back on any kind of peace track that leads to a two-state solution is going to be pushed off way into the future," Obama said.

The renewed instability in the Mideast is likely to trail Obama as he makes his way from Thailand to Myanmar and then Cambodia, his final stop before returning to Washington early Wednesday.

Obama planned talks in Myanmar with Prime Minister Thein Sein, who has orchestrated much of his country's recent reforms, and was expected to meet with democracy activist Aung Sun Suu Kyi in the home where she spent years under house arrest.

The president has trumpeted Suu Kyi's support of his outreach efforts, saying she was "very encouraging" of his trip.

The White House said Obama intended to express concern about ethnic tensions in Myanmar's western Rakhine state, where more than 110,000 people, the vast majority of them Muslims known as Rohingya, have been displaced.

The U.N. has said the Rohingya. who are widely reviled by the Buddhist majority in Myanmar, are among the world's most persecuted people.

The White House said Obama planned to press the matter with Thein Sein, along with demands to free remaining political prisoners.

The president also prepared to give a speech at Rangoon University, the center of the country's struggle for independence against Britain and the launching point for many pro-democracy protests. The former military junta shut the dormitories in the 1990s fearing further unrest and forced most students to attend classes on satellite campuses on the outskirts of town.

Obama began his Asian tour on a steamy day in Bangkok with a visit to the Wat Pho Royal Monastery. In stocking feet, the president and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton walked around a golden statue of a sitting Buddha. The complex is a sprawling display of buildings with colorful spires, gardens and waterfalls.

Obama then paid a courtesy call to the ailing, 84-year-old U.S.-born King Bhumibol Adulyadej in his hospital quarters. The king, the longest serving living monarch, was born in Cambridge, Mass., and studied in Europe.

Alonso 'proud' of Ferrari tactics in Texas

Ferrari stirred controversy with their decision to intentionally incur a grid penalty in order to benefit Fernando Alonso. But it worked, and Alonso said he was proud of how they'd handled it.

Ferrari's decision to intentionally incur a gearbox change penalty on Felipe Massa's car by breaking an official FIA seal was a controversial one, and was criticised by many as being "not sporting." But at the same time, it was effective.

By forcing the FIA to hand Felipe Massa a five place starting grid penalty for the start of the 2012 F1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, the team managed to boost Fernanso Alonso up a position on the grid.

That bumped him off the dirty line and and onto the clean side of the grid in seventh place, which he was promptly able to convert to fourth place by turn 1 that then set him up for a much-needed podium finish to keep his championship hopes alive for another week.

"This decision has been taken to maximise the potential at the start for Fernando," Ferrari communications chief Luca Colajanni bluntly admitted to the media before the race, rather than pretend that the gearbox had failed for technical reasons.

"I did not want to lie, I just wanted to tell the truth," said team principal Stefano Domenicali of the decision to come clean and not hide the truth behind the team's decision. "It would have been easy to do that, but that is not my style.

"I think because of the situation at Ferrari it is clear that the team is the most important thing in this situation and considering the data we had about the left side of the grid we knew there was very bad grip," Domenicali added. "Considering the situation we had last night, I think the objective had to be to take the fight to the last round.

"I think at the end of the day, in my shoes, if any other team principal [says that they] would do a different thing, they are lying."

Alonso said that he was proud that the team had not only made the difficult decision, but that they had not attempted to obfuscate the reasons behind the controversial strategy afterwards.

"I am very proud of the decision and very proud of the team for telling the truth," he told Sky Sports F1. "Not many teams when they made that decision would have done that."

Mercedes Midbass Enclosures - DIYMA Car Audio Forum

Quote:

Nice skeleton and foam mold technique. How is that 3M panel bond goo to work with? Have u used it in other situations too?

I was fortunate enough awhile back to chat with a 3M rep, we talked for bit . He told me " if your not sure what the substrate is ' or are worried about anything , use panel bond " he stated its best for gluing anything to anything.
It's the stuff the GM would use the bond glass/SMC/plastic panels to metal substructure.

That being said I was bonding fiberglass to fiberglass , so I could have used panel bond , SMC panel adhesive , etc. , etc.......

The 3M panel bond is easy to work with.
Upsides
Great bonding/ adhesion etc......
Long open time ( up to 90 min )
Downsides
24 hours to full cure ( unless heated )
Long cure time ( can't be in a hurry )
You need a gun to dispense it ( about 50.00 + )
You use a " mixing " tip each application ( average about 1.50 ) each.

I love the stuff. 3m ( or dura mix etc ) make a bunch of different products, all have applications, trick is picking the BEST product to use in your application.

Alexandru Csete, a/k/a OZ9AEC: open-source/software defined ...

The use of computers in conjunction with radio devices is not new: since we?ve been liberated from having to have a crystal, vacuum tube, or transistor specfically fabricated to transmit or receive over particular frequencies, the costs of manufacturing devices which can send and receive voice or data signals has dropped as their flexibility has increased. We?re going to try to explain how this works ? and how it works within the United States (i.e. F.C.C. domestically, the International Telecommunications Union ? I.T.U., an arm of the United Nations, and F.C.C. equivalent organizations in individual countries). This by way of introducing Alexandre Zcsete, call sign 0Z9AEC (in case readers are wondering, I do not know if the first character is an upper-case letter ?O? or tthe number ?0?(zero). We?ll be addressing this in a future post or posts; we believe the most elegant solution is to idenify a common, open-source ? i.e. F.O.S.S. font which readily distinguishes between the number ?zero? and the upper-case ?O,? as in ?Orange,? ?Octagon,? ?Oscar? (used by the U.S. Military and Nato, and, depending on your generation, you can imagine The Oscar Awards, Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street, or Oscar Madison of The Odd Couple). Without furher digression, we?ll now permit Mr. Csete tto introduce himself, using text from the ?About? page on his blog, oz9aec.net.

My name is Alexandru Csete, also known as OZ9AEC. I am a physicist from the University of Aarhus and I work as a development engineer in the antenna department at Thrane & Thrane. Before that I was 8 years in the European space industry working on the Automated Transfer Vehicle called Jules Verne and the Gaia scientific mission.

I have been the holder of a CEPT Cat. 1 amateur radio certificate since 1991. My primary interests today are satellite communications, software radios, digital high-rate modes, microwaves and developing free software for Unix-like operating systems.

It?s my educated guess that Mr. Csete is the holder of a license equivalent to one of the FCC?s amateur or ?ham? licenses; we?ll try to pin that down and update this piece. Non- American readers may not be aware of the American-language idiom that ?so-and-so? is not a ?rocket scientist? is a way of saying that someone isn?t particularly smart, the implication being that being a rocket scientist requires substantial smarts. Alexandru Csete is, in fact, a rocket scientist ? or the functional equivalent: he works on teams which use rockets (propulsion systems) to hurl functional systems into space.

At this point, we?re not going to explain how things work ? not because we don?t think our readers will follow the explanations.? Contrariwise, we?re pretty certain that if it?s my byline on the piece, we?ll get things wrong ? perhaps terribly wrong ? and we?d like to avoid that.

Here is one extremely cool thing that Alexandru Csete has come up with: a means of adding some software and some hardware to a PC and directly download NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite images. This? is, on its own terms, quite a feat, but it has serious practical implications: in a crisis, the NOAA servers are at risk of being overloaded, or suffering from power failure. A greater risk is a local power failure or network failure in your neighborhood or region prevents Internet access. Mr. Csete?s application (that is, the combination of hardware and software) provides a direct link between your PC and NOAA?s satellite(s).

Yet another good reason that community-based disaster risk assessment, response, and rebuilding should have ? among other things ? reserve power to keep laptops, radios (both two-way and receivers) and other critical equipment powered. Emergency power is another subject we hope to address comprehensively ? although , initially in the form of ?posts,? in order to force some discipline in keeping our explanations clear and concise.

If you?re ready to start your swim at the deep end of the pool, with the sharks, gators, and piranhas, you have our admiration and respect, and we wantto hear about it. Start with? Simple APT decoder prototype? on the? oz9aec.net blog. Mr. Csete has his own suggestions for beginner reading and projects in this post: GRC Examples. (?GRC? stands for ?GNU Radio Companion?).

..what people want. Not only do you have to find out what people want, you also have to ask them, you have to survey them. Then you have to research your competition. This is important. Research your competition. Have a look and see.

Let?s say that you do pass a success formula. You find out what people want, and what they want you can actually give them. That?s a good way to start, don?t you think? What do you do then? Well you know what they want on your website. They know that they don?t want all the flashing bells and whistles, they don?t want big graphics that download. They don?t want this. They don?t want that. What they do want is good solid information. Some how-
to information perhaps. Some training on how to get better use out of the products they?ve purchased from you. Information on new products. Updates, specials, perhaps a forum for frequently asked questions, answers. You need to find out what they want. Then the next thing you do is you go and research your competition. How do you do that?

Just go to any search engine and type in what someone else, you?ve seen the results from Wordtracker or other tool of what someone is looking for and pick the top ten websites. Have a quick glance at them yourself. Have a good look over them and find out what they?re offering. Then what you do, let?s say you have a customer database. You go and find the customers that you love and they love you. You want to get at least ten, minimum half a dozen people who are your customers who are not going to go to your competition. No matter how good the competition is they?re going to stay with you, and you ask them to review the competition websites for you. Here?s a rule. Don?t ask your friends, don?t ask your family, you want the truth. Remember that. I know. You want the truth. You want people to be hard if necessary.

Get them to check out the competition to tell you what they love and what they hate. Just jot all these down. Keep a little stash file, what I call a SWAT file. All this information together. This is part of the research. It only takes a couple of days. It doesn?t have to take long. This isn?t a 1-month, 30-day, 60-day, 6-month project. Forget about that. This is quick. If you?re doing it yourself you can do the entire thing in half an hour, but ask folks to research your competition for you. Once they?ve done that they come back to you with what they love and what they hate. Take it into account. Remember, you want to listen to them, not to you, to them. They are your customers. Number three of the three step formula is to create your product or your website that meets the needs of your customers. I cannot iterate that more strongly. It meets the needs of your customers. Not your needs, not your husband?s or wife?s needs, not your staff?s needs, not your suppliers, but your customers.

You?ll know this now because of the research you?ve done on what they want and what your competition does and what they love and hate about. Create the product in a way so that it meets the needs of your customers. When you?re dealing with a website designer or a web design company often they will ask you what you want. I?ve got to tell you and I don?t know how else to say this, I don?t care what you want when it comes to a website, I want to know what your customers want. Do you get the point? That?s how important it is. Do you want your website to succeed beyond your expectations or to crawl along? You?ve got to know what people want. Create your product or create your website so that it meets the needs, the wants, desires of your customers. Based on all of the research that you?ve done. Do that and you will be miles ahead of everyone.

A question just came to mind, someone asked me this in a recent workshop. They said, how about the logo? Have you ever come across a website before where they?ve got these really big logos? Do you know that ones that I mean? These huge logos and they open up and the whole main page is nothing but a logo. Well if your customers want that, fine. Let me say it to you this way. It?s one of my pet hates. If you want that you?d better ask your customers. Chances are I think you?ll find that none of them want it, not one single person. The logo makes you feels good, it makes your graphic designer feel good. Hey, check out my logo. No. Do it for your customers.

Step four of the three step formula. I couldn?t fit it into three steps, it had to be four steps. Step four, Market it to a Database. Once your website is up, once it?s running, you want to market it to a database. How do you do that? What database? Take a moment now, just jot down three different databases that you could possibly market it to. Let me give you some help. Number one is your existing customer database. They know you?re working on this project anyway don?t they? Of course. Your existing customer database, there?s one. How about another one? Your perspective customer database. Your prospects. You have one of those I hope. A list of people who want to buy from you, but just haven?t yet because they?re not quite sure, not yet confident. So there?s another database for you. How about this? Let?s say you have a product or service that my customers might like, but it?s not something that I personally sell, how about my customer database? What do you think of that?

You would simply access, you won?t get access to my database, but hey, if I like your product, if I?ve had a look at it, tested it and tried it out, smelled it and stayed in it if it?s an accommodation house, driven it if it?s a car, picked it up if it?s a pen, used it whatever it is, eaten there if it?s a restaurant. Let?s say that I?ve done that and I really, really like it and I can refer my customers to you. It?s called a joint venture. There?s an entire section in these discs on joint venture marketing, but I?ve got to tell you it?s beautiful. Marketing to a database will eventually become 95% of what you do and it will cost you nothing, well next to nothing. A little bit of time, perhaps a little bit of money. If you want to do it offline, and you can do it offline and perhaps if you?re just getting started you just might have to do it offline, but believe me there are some wonderful databases online that you can access through joint venture marketing. It may cost you a little bit if you do it offline, but it doesn?t have to.

The point is this. The rules with database marketing. This is looking at email marketing here and again there?s an entire section on that here, but never market to a database unless they?ve asked to be on it and they expect to receive things. Opt-in email marketing. Never, ever market to a database, an email database or any database for that matter, unless the people who are receiving the stuff have asked to be on it and expect to be receiving the stuff. Does that make sense to you? Because you?re hit and run and what we?ve got here is for conversion rates that are good, we don?t want a 0.003% conversion rate, we want a 3%, a 5%. I?ve even had as high as, and this will crack you up, as high as 85%, 84.7% it was with one campaign I did to my own database.

I?d like to get those kinds of numbers again, it was just a freak of nature. No it wasn?t. I followed the formula. These are some of the things that you need to consider. So let me ask you this, how do you measure your website?s success? How do you do that? Is it the traffic to your website?
If you get 100,000 people to your site next month is that good? Does that make your website successful? How about search engines? How about if you get top position on half a dozen different phrases? Number one, two or three position they?re all good enough, doesn?t have to be number one. One, two or three is fine, first page good. Does that measure your success? What about the bandwidth? The bandwidth is of course the amount of files that get downloaded through your website. I have just through the paulbarrs.com website I must have 7 or 8 gigabytes of bandwidth every month. That?s massive.

That?s because of all the audio work that I do. Remember I cast it up on the website, it could come through there. How about the newsletter subscribers? How many newsletter subscribers do you have? Do you have 500, 1000, 50,000, 500,000? Are they all 100% opted in? How do you measure your websites success? Click over to the next slide and I?ll tell you exactly how. There are and I?m going to read this for you. I want you to see, I want you to understand. You?ve read it already. There are only two ways to measure your websites success, it?s profits or it?s leads. If you have a lead generation website like we covered earlier on and you get 30 high quality leads in a month that you can convert 15-20, 50% sales with your real estate business for example, that?s how you can measure your success.

If it?s an E-commerce site and your physically taking the order online and it?s cost you $50,000 to set up, but you?re only make $2000-3000 in sales every month, that?s not successful, but if it costs you $1500 to set up and you make $20,000 in the first weekend, that?s successful. How do you measure it? Only two ways. I don?t care how much traffic you get and you shouldn?t care either. Traffic is not the measure of success. It is simply a number that will drop down through the funnel. OK? It?s measured by numbers. The numbers tell the whole story. The numbers are the profit that you make. I might only get 5000 visitors to a site in any given month, but still might make $10,000-20,000 from that site. To me that is successful because it doesn?t cost me anything to run the silly thing now that it?s up and running. I made a profit in the first weekend. Yeehaw, what more do you want? That?s success.

I want to just quickly go through some of the different points that are worthwhile considering. These are the things that you can ask in terms of what should or should not be on your website. The logo, I think I?ve covered that. One of my pet things, especially if you?re on a slow Internet connection, please folks if you?re going to have a logo keep it small. Don?t make it the whole page when people arrive. There?s no other way to explain it. The design. The design is the look, the layout, the feel, the structure of the page, the colors that are used and so on. Simple rule of thumb, and these are just simple points, you can jot them down in notes yourself there. The design, whatever it looks like on that front page please keep the design the same throughout. OK? Keep it the same throughout, not a hard thing to do. Don?t let it be different all the way along.

Link structure. The link structure again is part of the design, but again it?s very important. You have to build or have your website built to the lowest common denominator. That meaning the person who has no clue about how to use the Internet. So if your links are on that left-hand side on the front page, then you want to make sure they?re on the left-hand side on the second, third, fifth, fiftieth, one hundredth page. Keep all the links in the same place. Keep all the links in the same place and keep in mind if you?re going to be using those wonderful what are called JavaScript links, which are little drop-down buttons and menus and the little trees and the folders and they open up and all this kind of thing, this is really good, it?s OK. We can pretty well all read that online now with our updated web browsers, but the search engine robots that go through your site will not read them, they will not index them, they will not spider them and if they do the chances of you happening to get found are pretty few and far between.

So always keep some good old fashion html, good old fashion text links on your website. These are points for you to consider. So when someone is building your website you know what they?re doing and you know when they?re about to use, to use the phrase, screw you, because when someone else builds your website they?re looking for the fastest possible option to get that job in and out instead of what you want to do is make sure they do the right thing by you, not just by them. The sales copy on the website, please make sure you do have sales copy. Make sure you?ve got sales copy. These are the words, the phrases throughout the page. The information page is the sales pages that create emotion and entice people to either buy or contact you via either E-commerce sales website or lead generation. Words create emotion. Unless you?re in the adult industry, images will not sell better than words and people will tell you differently.

Images can enhance the words, nice multimedia slideshow presentations or the rotating 3D images of a property being sold, an accommodation or a holiday location, they can enhance the words, but on their own they?re not going to do the job. You need to make sure that you have good solid sales copy on your information pages. More points to consider. Your multi-database methods. In multi-database, I refer to this in the email marketing section, have more than one list. It doesn?t matter whether there are only 20 people in one contact database. If you have 7 or 8 of them and they?re all high quality prospects in a dozen or more different databases, that?s fine. Target your people with your followup information. Target them.

Don?t just send stuff willy nilly, always be sure to send exactly what people want when they want it, when they?re expecting it, what they?ve asked for. You can do this easier with multi-databasing rather than just having one massive, big contact email list for everybody. Let?s look at location once for example. Here in Australia you could have one state-by-state. Heck, you could do it anywhere. Actually I just do it, one state-by-state. The privacy policy. That?s a good one. A privacy policy, you need to have a privacy policy on your website. If you?re collecting people?s information and you?re going to be sending them stuff you want to let them know what you?re going to do with their information and who else are you going to share it with. Hopefully nobody. You want to keep it to yourself, tight and secure. Let them know that.

Let them know that they can unsubscribe from your mailings at any time should they choose. Make some fun out of it. Tell them, look I hope you won?t unsubscribe but if you do here?s how you do it. Let them know they can contact you without fear that their email address being sold. Let them know that you?re using a secure server for your processing of orders, that their credit card details are safe. All part of your privacy policy. Product images. Now in this particular case I?m referring to a graphical representation of your image. Let?s take the E-Business Mastery for an example. When you get this thing in this little box, in this package when it arrives to you it looks different to what it does on the web. The web is just a product image that?s a graphical representation.

I?m going to suggest that you do that for almost everything that you?ve got because images as I?ve said can enhance the sales copy, but what you need to decide is are you going to have a photograph of the item or are you going to have a graphical representation? It?s just a question you need to ask. How do you find out what you need? You ask your customers. You survey people way back in the beginning, what do they want? The FAQ. The FAQ are always very important. I think every website should have a FAQ, however I would strongly suggest that you don?t put down FAQ because some people don?t know what a FAQ is. Instead, spell it out, frequently asked questions and you will get frequently asked questions and if you don?t get these things onto your website you?re going to get a dozen or more people every day emailing you the same questions. Instead, if you have these questions on your website and of course the answers, that?s kind of important, you?ll save yourself a lot of time, effort and your customers will appreciate it. Let?s look at the contact details. This is a beautiful one. So many people, I don?t know why?
