Miami church communities, protesters react to Zimmerman verdict

MIAMI (WSVN) -- South Florida residents disheartened by the outcome of the George Zimmerman trial found solace and solidarity at local churches that opened their doors to remember Trayvon Martin and resume the dialogue surrounding his untimely death. They also took to the streets to voice their opinions.

"It's going to be hard, but we have no choice but to move forward," said Tina Owens, Martin's cousin, out side a Miami church Sunday morning.

A jury of six women acquitted Zimmerman of murder and manslaughter charges of the shooting death of the unarmed Miami Gardens teen, Saturday around 10 p.m.

"The women, I guess, they didn't have the feeling or care for someone else's son that was slain without a cause," said Pastor Douglas Cook of Jordan Grove Baptist Church.

Dozens filled the Liberty City house of worship Sunday morning. "We're gonna keep praying, looking up, talking to God," Cook said.

The clergyman's message to parishioners: keep calm, keep strong. "I was surprised and a little saddened [by the verdict]," said churchgoer Maya Johnson Randle. "God is able, has the last say."

At Impact Miami Church in North Miami, more Trayvon supporters gathered and listened to peaceful prayers and messages from Pastor Jack Hakimian. "He pursued Trayvon, got out of his car, approached him and began to get his butt whipped by a young man who he underestimated, that's been raised in the rough, tough neighborhood of Miami Gardens," he said. "That's what really happened."

In Northwest Miami-Dade dozens more, mainly children and teens, stood on the street and held signs like "No justice no peace" and "Rest in peace Trayvon Martin."

"We were taught as a child if someone's following you, you're supposed to fight for your life" said protester Shawnese Eberhart. "That's what Trayvon was doing."

Protester James Wilson said the Sanford, Fla. neighborhood watchman should have at least been convicted of manslaughter. "I'm very disappointed with the verdict," he said. "Mr. Zimmerman, at the very minimum, is guilty of manslaughter because he did take the life of an innocent child."

Big favorite, or big disappointment?

Prince Fielder can join Ken Griffey Jr. as the only three-time winners of the Home Run Derby on Monday night, but to do it, he?ll have to best Chris Davis, who is currently on pace to hit 60 bombs this year.

This year?s Home Run Derby field is unusual in that it features just three players currently among baseball?s top 20 home run hitters:

Davis ? 37
Pedro Alvarez ? 24
Robinson Cano ? 21
Michael Cuddyer ? 16
Fielder ? 16
Yoenis Cespedes ? 15
David Wright ? 13
Bryce Harper ? 13

Davis is the major league leader, of course, but the next three on the list are absent: Miguel Cabrera, Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Gonzalez, who chose to pull out due to injury. Other All-Stars with 20 homers missing include Domonic Brown, Nelson Cruz, Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Bautista.

Besides Fielder, 2011 champ Robinson Cano is the only other former HR Derby winner in the field. David Ortiz no longer appears interested in competing after winning in 2010 and finishing tied for third in 2011.

Fielder and Cano are also the only holdovers from last year?s field. Fielder won with 28 homers, include 12 in the finals to beat Bautista. Cano, who hit 32 homers in winning in 2011, went homerless last year, the only player to do so the last three years. He should be pretty motivated tonight.

Alas, Cano is one of the biggest long shots, according to Bovada:

Davis: 11/4
Fielder: 3/1
Harper: 5/1
Alvarez: 6/1
Cespedes: 6/1
Cano: 13/2
Wright: 10/1
Cuddyer: 14/1

One other thing that should be noted here: since Citi Field altered the fences prior to 2012, it?s been a better home run park for right-handed hitters than left-handers. Before that, the opposite was true.

For that reason, I think Cespedes is the real sleeper pick tonight, though it wouldn?t surprise if expends a little too much energy in round one and doesn?t have enough left for the subsequent rounds. The last time a round one leader went on to win the Derby was Fielder in 2009.

But Fielder should be considered the favorite based on experience. My guess is that Davis disappoints. The Home Run Derby is typically about pulling the ball, and Davis hits his homers all over the place. As for Harper, while I think he?ll win one or two eventually, I doubt it?s his time just yet.

Pregnant Texas Woman, Fetus Die in Oklahoma Crash

Staff Report
The Associated Press

NEWCASTLE, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a pregnant Texas woman and her fetus were killed when the pickup truck they were riding in crashed on Interstate 44 near Newcastle.

Troopers say 25-year-old Eva Heide of Lamesa, Texas, and her fetus died and two others in the vehicle were seriously injured in the collision Saturday.

Investigators say Heide was a passenger in a truck that collided with another vehicle on the interstate, then hit a bridge and overturned. Troopers say Heide was thrown from the truck and was struck by the second vehicle.

Two people in the second vehicle were treated and released at a local hospital.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott formally enters gubernatorial race

SAN ANTONIO -- It began with all the music and fanfare of a rock concert. An excited Republican crowd awaited the introduction of Attorney General Greg Abbott (R-Texas) by his teen-aged daughter Audrey.

"I know that my dad will be a great leader just like he has been a great dad," said Audrey Abbott. "He will Take care of your family just like he has taken care of mine."

Confined to a wheelchair since the age of 26, Abbott joked about the jogging accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down and required two steel rods to be inserted in his back.

"You know too often you hear politicians get up and talk about a spine of steel," said Abbott. "I actually have one, and I will use my steel spine to fight for you and for Texas families every Single day!"

The chosen location for the announcement held special significance for Abbott, a short distance from where he proposed to his wife Cecilia, whose family lives in San Antonio. Abbott credited his wife with helping him through the difficult times following his injury.

"Our marriage was a uniting of cultures," Abbott said of Cecilia. "My Anglo heritage, and Cecilia's Irish and Hispanic heritage. The reality is we may have come from different cultures, but we realized we shared the very same foundation."

In his twenty minutes speech, Abbott also highlighted his record as the state's longest-serving attorney general.

"I fought for justice in the courtroom and in our communities," said Abbott. "I fought for the constitutional principle of federalism, suing an overreaching federal government 27 times. I didn't invent that phrase, 'Don't Mess With Texas,' but I have applied it more than anyone else ever has."

"The very day the president signed 'Obamacare' into law, I took him to court to fight for our constitutional rights. I know the Constitution," said Abbott. "I've enforced the Constitution, and let me tell you, the Second Amendment and the Tenth Amendment are not suggestions, they are guaranteed rights that I will preserve, protect and defend."

When the official announcement came 15 minutes into his speech, Abbott's many supporters erupted into applause.

"I will never stop fighting," said Abbott. "And that's why I'm asking you and the people of Texas to elect me as your next governor."

With more than $20 million in his campaign war chest, Abbott begins the 2014 gubernatorial race with a major cash advantage. He offered a glimpse Sunday at what his campaign will focus on.

"Our water supplies are going too low. You know by traveling the highways that our traffic congestion is getting too thick, and our schools must do better," said Abbott. "We can solve those? problems not by raising taxes, but by right-sizing government and putting real limits on spending in Austin, Texas."

Abbott will face a Republican primary challenger in former Texas Workforce Commissioner and former state party chair Tom Pauken, but when it comes to a Democratic opponent in a general election, there's only speculation.

Many Democrats hope state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) will run, but Davis has yet to indicate whether she intends to enter the race. The Texas Democratic Party has already launched the website thisisgregabbott.com, and unveiled a new web video Sunday labeling Abbott "bad for women."

"When Rick Perry announced he was stepping down, most Texans had a dream come true. But the sad reality is that Greg Abbott's record of failure - which is far worse than Perry's - would be a nightmare," Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement Sunday.?

"Texan women have been attacked for years, but now Abbott has declared another war upon their rights," said Hinojosa. "Women throughout the state, have already been through this rodeo. We will not stop informing voters about Abbott and his record of extremism.? Democrats will continue to organize and show up in large numbers to make our voices heard, all the way to election day in November 2014."

A former Democratic state representative who switched to the Republican party before announcing he would not seek reelection, Aaron Pe?a said Democrats, whether Davis or someone else, would face a difficult election in 2014.

"Many Hispanic Democrats are Catholic and pro-life," said Pe?a. "And certainly amongst the older Hispanics, I don't think her message is being well-received. That's going to be a nuance they're going to have to deal with."

Meanwhile Abbott's supporters said although not surprised, they were nonetheless excited by the Sunday announcement.

"He holds my same conservative values, as far as the Second Amendment and the First Amendment," said San Antonio resident George Howard.

"I like the policies that are in place," said Audrey Howard. "I hope he continues along those lines and pushes them even more."

"Join with me in fighting for the ideals and the values of the greatest people to inhabit this earth, the people of Texas," Abbott concluded before greeting supporters.

Now the stage is set for the battle for 2014.

Indiana (SID): USA Men's World University Games Team Overpowers Norway For 91-51 Win

July 14, 2013

Box Score | Quotes | Photo Gallery

KAZAN, Russia - Dishing out 29 assists on 34 made baskets, the 2013 USA Basketball Men's World University Games Team (4-2) raced past Norway (2-4) for a 91-51 in the 2013 World University Games on Sunday morning at Miras Sports Complex in Kazan, Russia.

Will Sheehey (Indiana/Stuart, Fla.) led the USA with 16 points; while Cory Jefferson (Baylor/ Killeen, Texas) and Aaron White (Iowa/Strongsville, Ohio) both finished with 11 points and seven rebounds; and Doug McDermott (Creighton/Ames, Iowa) also reached double-figures with 10 points.

Helping the USA to score 38 fast-break points, compared to Norway's 10, and 23 points off of 19 Norwegian turnovers were Spencer Dinwiddie (Colorado/Woodland Hills, Calif.) with eight assists and nine points, Yogi Ferrell (Indiana/Indianapolis, Ind.) with seven assists and eight points and Luke Hancock (Louisville/ Roanoke, Va.) with six assists.

"When you lose two in a row and are knocked out of the medal round, it's tough to get off the mat, and these guys showed that they were capable of that today," said USA head coach Bob McKillop (Davidson College). "They showed it by their unselfishness and their team defense."

The USA next faces Germany at 10 a.m. (times listed are local; Kazan, Russia is +8 hours from EDT) on July 15, with the winner of that game moving on to play for ninth place at 3 p.m. on July 16, which is the best-possible finish for the USA after missing the medal round, Germany improved to 4-2 after topping Mongolia 101-48 in today's 10:30 a.m. contest.

The USA's unselfish play and 44 points-in-the-paint helped combat its 30.4 percent shooting from deep (7-23 3pt FGs) and its icy 53.3 percent shooting from the free throw line (16-30 FTs).

"The coaches said it best, we moved the ball and got easy baskets," Sheehey said. "Our defensive pressure was better today, too, and that also leads to easy baskets."

?

?

Norway was able to almost keep pace with the USA in the first 10 minutes of the game, due in part to the USA shooting just 35.7 percent from the field (5-14 FGs) in the first quarter and also to five U.S. turnovers. Norway cut the USA's eight-point lead, 17-9, at 2:16 to just two points by the first intermission after closing on a 5-0 run to trail 17-15.

The USA's shooting quickly warmed up however, and the Americans finished at 52.3 percent from the field (34-65 FGs) for the game.

While holding Norway scoreless for the first 4:23 of the second period, five U.S. scorers put up 15 points to help widen the gap to 32-15 at 5:49. A 3-pointer from Norway ended the onslaught, but it the damage had been done, and the USA headed into the halftime locker room with a 43-25 lead and control of the game's momentum.

The red, white and blue continued to improve its advantage throughout, outscoring Norway 21-15 in the third quarter and 27-11 in the fourth to bring the game to its 91-51 final score.

With a score from Tyler Haws (BYU/Alpine, Utah) at the 9:29 mark in the fourth quarter, all 11 healthy U.S. players had scored, and a 3-pointer from Ferrell with just 1:06 remaining marked the USA's largest lead of the game, 43 points, at 89-46.

Treveon Graham (VCU/Temple Hills, Md.) did not play due to injury.

"We started having fun again, and I think that's important because everyone was starting to hit shots and getting open dunks," said Alex Kirk (New Mexico/Los Alamos, N.M.). "That's what's fun, and that's why you play basketball, to have fun with it. I think that kind of got the energy going, and then our bench came through. The second-set sparked that, so that was a lot of fun."

Today's other ninth-24th place games will see Finland (3-2) against Czech Republic (2-3) and China (1-4) versus United Arab Emirates (0-5) at 12:30 p.m.; Mexico (3-2) against South Korea (2-3) at 1 p.m.; Ukraine (1-4) will play Philippines (0-5) at 6 p.m.; and Japan (1-4) takes on Oman (0-5) at 8:30 p.m. In the medal quarterfinals: Canada (5-0) will take on Brazil (4-1) at 6 p.m., Serbia (5-0) faces Estonia (4-1) at 6:30 p.m., Lithuania (5-0) plays Australia (4-1) at 8:30 p.m. and host Russia (5-0) will face Romania (4-1) at 9 p.m.

Assisting McKillop on the USA sideline are John Beilein of the University of Michigan and Frank Martin of the University of South Carolina.

The USA men are currently 141-11 all-time record in World University Games play.

Merkel urges stronger Europe, global data rules

BERLIN (AP) ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Sunday for tougher European and global rules on data protection amid fallout from recent revelations about U.S. surveillance programs.

Merkel pledged that Germany will take a "very strict position" in ongoing talks on European Union-wide data rules. Germany will push for those rules to oblige companies such as Google and Facebook to tell European countries who they share data with, she told ARD television.

The chancellor also suggested that a protocol on data protection could be added to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, a U.N. accord that dates back to 1966. She didn't give details of what exactly that protocol might entail.

Germans are sensitive about protecting their personal data. Ahead of September elections in which the conservative Merkel is seeking a third term, the center-left opposition says her government isn't doing enough to address those worries and confront the U.S.

Germany's top security official, Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich, met in Washington on Friday with Attorney General Eric Holder and Vice President Joe Biden. He declared himself satisfied with the meetings and stressed the need to prevent attacks, saying afterward that a U.S. program called PRISM searches in a "very targeted" way for terrorism-related information.

Merkel's opponents asserted that Friedrich made no headway in securing information on U.S. surveillance activities ? renewing attacks that have yet to produce any obvious shift in polls.

Merkel said Friedrich's trip "can only be a first step" in discussions with the U.S. and that experts from the two countries will remain in contact. She said she expects "a clear commitment from the American government for the future that they will keep to German law on German soil."

She added, however, that she has no evidence at this point that U.S. agencies haven't done so in the past.

Jerry Brown, Kamala Harris Urge California Court To Deny Request To Reinstate Prop 8

California Governor Jerry Brown and Attorney General Kamala Harris have urged the California Supreme Court to deny a request to reinstate Proposition 8, California's now ended gay marriage ban.

?After years of litigation, there is now a final determination that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional,? a brief filed with the high court by lawyers for Brown and Harris reads.

?To revive Proposition 8, as petitioners have asked, by ordering county officials to enforce it would command the violation of gay and lesbian Californians' federal constitutional rights.?

Protect Marriage, the group that sponsored the 2008 constitutional amendment which defined marriage as a heterosexual union, on Friday asked the state's highest court to reinstate the ban, arguing that Brown did not have the authority to end enforcement of Proposition 8.

Proposition 8 tumbled after the Supreme Court ruled that interveners lacked standing to defend the law, leaving in place a 2010 circuit court ruling declaring it unconstitutional.

Within days after the Supreme Court ruled, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted its stay in the ruling, allowing same-sex marriages to resume in California.

However, Protect Marriage argues that a provision in the California Constitution prohibits state officials from refusing to enforce a law unless it has been deemed unconstitutional by an appellate court.

Protect Marriage also argues that the 2010 ruling only applies to the two counties where plaintiffs live, not the entire state.

On June 28, Brown ordered clerks in all 58 counties to resume issuing marriage license to gay couples.

Jenny McCarthy, Donnie Wahlberg Dating: New Couple Reportedly Spent July 4th Together

Looks like Jenny McCarthy has found herself a new man, and he's none other than Mark Wahlberg's brother Donnie, of New Kids on the Block.

Us Weekly exclusively reports that the couple are officially an item. "Yes, they recently started dating and are having a lot of fun," a source told the magazine, adding that the two spent 4th of July weekend together.

Wahlberg was a guest on McCarthy's VH1 show back in March and the two playfully sucked on lollipops and exchanged pillow talk (see video below).

The blonde bombshell famously dated actor comedian Jim Carrey for over five years, and has a son from a previous relationship. Wahlberg was married to Kim Fey for nine years and they have two children together.

A request for comment made to McCarthy and Wahlberg's reps was not immediately answered.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? After a year and a half of living as a hermit, George Zimmerman emerged from a Florida courthouse a free man, cleared of all charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

His brother said the former neighborhood watch volunteer was still processing the reality that he wouldn't serve prison time for the killing, which Zimmerman, 29, has maintained was an act of self-defense. A jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder late Saturday night and declined to convict him on a lesser charge of manslaughter.

However, with many critics angry over his acquittal, his freedom will likely be limited.

"He's going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an interview on CNN.

Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed furious debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters across the country lashed out against police in the Orlando suburb of Sanford, outraged that it took 44 days for Zimmerman to be arrested. Many, including Martin's parents, claimed Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

Six anonymous female jurors ? all but one of them white ? considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night the 17-year-old was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

They deliberated more than 15 hours over two days before announcing late Saturday night that they had reached a verdict.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said in August 2012 that Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living "like a hermit" and were not working because they feared for their safety.

After Saturday's verdict, police, officials and civil rights leaders urged peace and told protesters not to resort to violence. While defense attorneys said they were thrilled with the outcome, O'Mara suggested Zimmerman's safety would be an ongoing concern.

"There still is a fringe element that wants revenge," O'Mara said. "They won't listen to a verdict of not guilty."

Those watching the case reacted strongly when the not-guilty verdict was announced. Martin's mother and father were not in the courtroom when the verdict was read; supporters of his family who had gathered outside yelled "No! No!" upon learning of the verdict.

Andrew Perkins, 55, a black resident of Sanford, angrily asked outside the courthouse: "How the hell did they find him not guilty?"

"He killed somebody and got away with murder," Perkins shouted, so angry he shook, looking in the direction of the courthouse. "He ain't getting no probation or nothing."

Trayvon Martin's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, said simply on Twitter: "Et tu America?" ? a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" known as an expression of betrayal.

Protesters had taken to the streets late Saturday and into Sunday morning in Florida, Atlanta and San Francisco, among other places. The demonstrators seemed to largely heed the advice of officials and others who urged them not to resort to violence.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump acknowledged the disappointment of Trayvon Martin's supporters, ranking the teen alongside civil rights heroes Medgar Evers and Emmett Till in the history of the fight for equal justice. However, he said, "for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful."

Martin's family maintained the teen was not the aggressor, and prosecutors suggested Martin was scared because he was being followed by a stranger. Defense attorneys, however, claimed Martin knocked Zimmerman down and was slamming the older man's head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman fired his gun.

Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him was a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.

State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."

"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.

Zimmerman also had some supporters outside the courthouse, including Cindy Lenzen, 50, of Casslebury, and her brother, 52-year-old Chris Bay, who stood watching others chant slogans such as, "the whole system's guilty."

Lenzen and Bay ? who are white ? called the entire case "a tragedy," especially for Zimmerman.

"It's a tragedy that he's going to suffer for the rest of his life," Bay said. "No one wins either way. This is going to be a recurring nightmare in his mind every night."

Before a special prosecutor assigned to the case ordered Zimmerman's arrest, thousands of protesters had gathered in Sanford, Miami, New York and elsewhere, many wearing hoodies like the one Martin had on the night he died. They also carried Skittles and a can of iced tea, items Martin had in his pocket. President Barack Obama weighed in, saying that if he had a son, "he'd look like Trayvon."

Despite the racially charged nature of the case, race was barely mentioned at the trial.

"This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms," Corey said. "We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries."

One of the few mentions of race came from witness Rachel Jeantel, the Miami teen who was talking to Martin by phone moments before he was shot. She testified that he described being followed by a "creepy-ass cracker" as he walked through the neighborhood.

Jeantel gave some of the trial's most riveting testimony. She said she overheard Martin demand, "What are you following me for?" and then yell, "Get off! Get off!" before his cellphone went dead.

The jurors had to sort out clashing testimony from 56 witnesses in all, including police, neighbors, friends and family members.

For example, witnesses who got fleeting glimpses of the fight in the darkness gave differing accounts of who was on top. And Martin's parents and Zimmerman's parents both claimed that the person heard screaming for help in the background of a neighbor's 911 call was their son. Numerous other relatives and friends weighed in, too, as the recording was played over and over in court. Zimmerman had cuts and scrapes on his face and the back of his head, but prosecutors suggested the injuries were not serious.

To secure a second-degree murder conviction, prosecutors had to convince the jury that Zimmerman acted with a "depraved" state of mind ? that is, with ill will, hatred or spite. Prosecutors said he demonstrated that when he muttered, "F------ punks. These a-------. They always get away" during a call to police as he watched Martin walk through his neighborhood.

To win a manslaughter conviction, prosecutors had to convince the jury only that Zimmerman killed without lawful justification.

Alaska's military supports BLM firefighting efforts

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - Fort Wainwright Garrison has provided skilled personnel and equipment to help with Bureau of Land Management's ongoing activities of containing and extinguishing the Stuart Creek 2 fire.

The Directorate of Emergency Services has deployed firefighters, emergency medical technicians and law-enforcement officers, along with fire engines, brush trucks and ambulance in coordination with the Alaska Fire Service.

Mike Bonnell, chief of plans and operations for the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, said they have air-traffic controllers, airfield operators and personnel working around the clock to keep BLM and military aircraft moving safely to and from the site.

Personnel from the Army Community Service have been placed near the threatened communities, helping at the Weller Elementary School evacuation shelter and Pleasant Valley Store locations.
Betty McCain, Family Advocacy manager, said ACS was on hand providing assistance to evacuating families, contacting military Families and providing help to the Red Cross.

U.S. Army Alaska Aviation Task Force assets have also been deployed and have been working under direction of the BLM for water drops within the Stuart Creek 2 fire area.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Charles Robertson, a Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment CH-47F copilot, explained how military CH-47F Chinooks and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters have provided fire suppression from the air. Large Bambi buckets are used and attached via tethers to the helicopters, allowing for filling and dumping of large amounts of water without landing.
Robertson said the buckets, which are carried by the CH-47F Chinooks, can hold nearly 2,000 gallons of water. As BLM aircraft survey and track the fire, the military helicopters are directed to specific drop sites. After dropping their loads on target, the helicopters then go to local water sources and refill for the next drop.

As aircraft were being used from above, USARAK Soldiers and personnel operating military assets such as bulldozers, graders, dump trucks and military Humvees were on the ground in direct support of the firefighting effort.

Firefighters and equipment from Fort Greely and Alaska Army National Guard UH-60s are also providing support.

Anyone who believes they have suffered loss as a result of the Army's possible wrongdoing may submit a claim to the U.S. Army Alaska legal office via their mailing address or call 353-6155 for more information. Send mail to:

Summer Baseball: Sudbury Legion tops Methuen in 12 innings

Alex McLaughlin drove in Mike Walsh with a walk-off RBI single to center field in the bottom of the 12th inning, as Sudbury Post 191 defeated Methuen, 2-1, in the Elite Eight playoffs of the American Legion National Bound tournament Thursday at Hanover Insurance Park at Holy Cross.

Sudbury (14-1) advances to face East Side Post 201, a 13-3 winner over Walpole, at Holy Cross on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the Elite Eight. Friday?s winner moves on to the New England Regional of the National Bound tournament.

Sudbury?s Gino Fordiani walked to start off the bottom of the 12th and was pinch run for by Walsh. Robbie Olyphant dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Walsh to second before Sam Miller?s single gave Sudbury first-and-third with one out.

McLaughlin came up and delivered only the ninth hit of the game for Post 191 to clinch the victory. There were only 18 hits total between the two teams, none of which went for extra bases.

Reid Jordan pitched five scoreless innings for Sudbury before Marcus Otis came on for two innings of scoreless relief.

The game was scoreless until Methuen scored the first run of the game in the top of the ninth off Ben Chiasson, but he was bailed out in the bottom of the ninth when Olyphant scored on an RBI single by Miller to force extra innings.

Chiasson shook off the lone run in five innings of work to earn the win.

Post 191 and manager Len Noce watched as an extremely talented and skilled East Side (16-4) of Zone 4 cruised past Walpole in Thursday?s earlier matchup.

"They are a very aggressive team, who are fast and can hit very well," said Noce.

"We got an extremely tough opponent tomorrow and you work so hard to get here you just want to play your best game when you get here," he added. "I just want to give it the best shot we got and see what happens.

Last year Noce?s squad was a win away from advancing to the New England Regional but bowed out to Barnstable in the Elite Eight semifinals. There are only four returning players from last year?s Sudbury team.

"It?s going to be a real test of our team?s character," said Noce. "This team we put together has had 15 games of bonding and building and tomorrow will be the test to see how far they have come."

LOWELL 2, ASHLAND 1: Ashland starter Ben Smith threw a two?hitter with nine strikeouts in a complete-game effort, but Lowell rallied to tip visiting Post 77 in a Zone 5 game.

The Assumption College-bound Smith, a right-hander from Bellingham, allowed just earned run. Brendan Thurber went 2-for-4 and scored Ashland?s lone run in the top of the first inning on Smith?s RBI single.

The loss drops Ashland (9-5) into a tie with Lowell for the fourth and final playoff spot in the zone. Zone 5A-leading Sudbury, Zone 5B-leading Medford and Hudson hold the top three spots in the entire zone.

Thurber, Matt Jeye and Thurber led off the game with singles. With no outs, Jeye and Thurber then moved to second and third on a passed ball, but Lowell got out of the jam.

Overall, Ashland stranded seven runners in scoring position. Post 77 had seven hits in the game, including Kevin Guiliano?s double in the fourth inning.

Lowell tied the game in the bottom of the first and scored the winning run in the sixth.

FRAMINGHAM, FRANKLIN POSTPONED: Both the Framingham Post 74 vs. Cherry Valley Zone 4 game and Franklin Post 75 vs. Walpole Zone 6 West game slated Thursday were postponed.

The make-up dates for both games will be determined.

Senior Babe Ruth

BELLINGHAM 5, MILFORD 1: Sean Postler allowed one earned on five hits and struck out three in five innings to pick up the win for Bellingham (12-3-1) in a Central Mass. Senior Babe Ruth South matchup at Milford.

Jeff Dunn pitched two innings of relief and also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Bellingham. Taylor Sutherland scored twice and Kevin Valentine went 2-for-4 in the win.

FRANKLIN-ASHLAND POSTPONED: The Ashland at Franklin Central Mass. Senior Babe Ruth baseball game scheduled Thursday night was postponed because of wet field conditions.

The game has been re-scheduled for Saturday at Fletcher Field 3 in Franklin starting at 10:30 a.m.

South Africa's Jobodwana sizzles to sprint double at World University Games

No less than 10 gold medals were decided on day four of the World University Games with the hosts Russia taking half of them in Kazan on Wednesday (10).

However, the plaudits for the best performance went to South African sprinter Anaso Jobodwana who added to his 100m title when he sped to the 200m crown in 20.00.

The 20-year-old student at Jackson State University in the USA will be mildly frustrated by the fact that the wind reading was 2.4 metres-per-second, but even though the breeze was too strong for record purposes, it didn?t invalidate what a fine run it was.

Jamaica?s Rasheed Dwyer and Japan?s Shota Iizuka were second and third in 20.23 and 20.33 respectively.?

The first final of the afternoon was the women?s Hammer and the USA?s American collegiate (NCAA) champion, Jeneva McCall, clinched her global title with her third-round effort of 73.75m.

Russia?s 2013 world leader Oksana Kondratyeva had to be satisfied with silver with 72.22m while Moldova?s 2011 World University Games champion Zalina Marghieva was unable to defend her title and finished third with 71.10m.

In the morning, Russian athletes achieved a clean sweep in the women?s 20km Race Walk.

The four Russians were packed together right from the start onwards and never let the other competitors come near.

After the disqualification of former World record-holder Vera Sokolova, Anisya Kirdyapkina took the gold medal in a World University Games record of 1:29:30, Irina Yumanova passed the line second in 1:30:41, with Lina Bikulova a distant third in 1:32:30.

Russia easily were the winners of the team title.

Russia?s Dmitry Tarabin put all his energy into the first attempt and his 83.11m was enough for the gold and make it a husband-and-wife double after his spouse Mariya Abakumova won the women?s title on Tuesday.

A surprising winner in the men?s 400m Hurdles was Slovakia?s Martin Kucera. With a fifth place in Tuesday?s semifinal, he only just scraped into the final. Coming into the home straight, and running in lane one, he was near the back of the field but in the last 100 metres he overtook the complete field before finishing in a personal best of 49.79.

Finland?s Hanna-Maari Latvala, who entered the competition with a season?s best time of 23.62, had the best start of the field in the 200m final and kept her lead until 40 metres before the end, when she was overtaken by Kimberly Hyacinthe.

The Canadian took the gold in a personal best of 22.78 while Latvala broke the 23-second barrier for the first time by clocking 22.98 for the silver medal.

USA?s Vashti Thomas won the 100m Hurdles in a super-quick 12.61. She had by far the best start and kept her advantage the whole race. She broke the World University Games record of Poland?s Lucyna Langer, set in 1979 at altitude in Mexico City, by 0.01.

Belarus? Alina Talay was second with 12.78.

Russia?s two-time World University Games champion Alexandra Kiryashova could go no higher than 4.20m in the Pole Vault, which placed her seventh and opened the door for her compatriot Anastasia Savchenko to take her title.

Savchenko cleared all her attempts up to and including 4.60m on her first attempt before three failures at a World University Games record-equalling height of 4.70m.

The last event of the day was the women?s 3000m Steeplechase and Russia?s Olympic and World champion Yulia Zaripova typically went into the lead straight from the gun.

She won in a European-leading time of 9:28.00 and finished more than 12 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

Russia? 2011 World champion Tatyana Chernova is the overnight leader in the Heptathlon with 3861 points, only 66 points shy of her day-one total when she took the world gold in Daegu, and 167 points ahead of Czech Republic?s Eliska Klucinova.

Latvia?s Laura Ikauniece is just 24 points behind Klucinova and the gap between places two and five is only 80 points so, barring Chernova having a disaster, an interesting battle for silver and bronze can be expected.

Blue-haired Bynes has bong-toss case delayed

Celebs

NEW YORK ? Actress Amanda Bynes, wearing a long blue wig and sweat pants, appeared briefly in court on Tuesday on charges of marijuana possession and throwing a bong out a window and a judge postponed her case until September.

Amanda Bynes arrives at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York on Tuesday.

Bynes, 27, made no comment during the hearing but has previously denied the charges of possession, reckless endangerment and attempted tampering with evidence.

All the charges against Bynes, who has made headlines in recent months for erratic behavior, odd posts on Twitter and legal problems, are misdemeanors.

In addition to setting a Sept. 26 court date, Judge Diana Boyar set an Aug. 26 deadline for filing motions to dismiss the charges.

Bynes, who wore a tank top, big sunglasses and false eyelashes in addition to the wig and sweat pants, was rushed out of the courthouse after her appearance.

"All we told her (the judge) was that there was no resolution yet and she gave us a new date," said Ross Kramer, one of Bynes' lawyers.

Kramer said Bynes' team would continue to work with the prosecutors to see if they can reach a resolution to the case.

Bynes was taken into custody in May after police were called to her high-rise apartment building after an employee reported someone smoking marijuana in the building's lobby.

Police said they were directed to Bynes' apartment and smelled marijuana after the actress invited them in. They also saw a bong, which is used for smoking marijuana.

Bynes was taken into custody after she grabbed the bong and threw it out of a window of the 36th-floor apartment, police said.

During a court appearance in May, Bynes' attorney accused police of entering the apartment illegally and said nothing was recovered during the search.

Bynes gained early stardom at the age of 13 when she had her own comedy show on the Nickelodeon television network. She also had a major role in the movie "What a Girl Wants" but has not appeared in a film since 2010's "Easy A."

Bynes has faced violations for drunk driving and hit and run in the past year and is on probation in California for driving on a suspended license.

Former China rail minister gets suspended death sentence: Xinhua

BEIJING (Reuters) - China gave former railways minister Liu Zhijun a suspended death sentence for corruption, state media said on Monday, in a case seen as a test of President Xi Jinping's resolve to crack down on pervasive graft.

Liu got the "death penalty with a two-year reprieve," for "bribery and abuse of power" from the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court, China's official Xinhua news agency said, a sentence that typically amounts to life in prison.

Since becoming Communist Party boss in November, and president in March, Xi has made battling rampant corruption a key objective of his administration, warning that the problem is so severe it could threaten the party's survival.

Liu is the highest-ranking official sentenced since Xi took office, although the case predates his watch. The new president has said anti-corruption efforts should target low-ranking "flies" as well as powerful "tigers", but few high-level violators have been probed yet.

Liu was formally charged in April with abuse of power, taking bribes and malpractice, conduct that led to "huge losses" of public assets, state media said when his trial began at a Beijing courthouse under heavy security in early June.

He was sacked in February last year and later expelled from the Communist Party. Liu had successfully resisted a merger with the Ministry of Transport six years ago, but the government announced in March the two ministries would be joined.

Xinhua has said Liu took advantage of his position and helped 11 people to either get promotions or win contracts, in return accepting 64.6 million yuan ($10.53 million) in bribes between 1986 and 2011.

China's railway system has faced numerous problems in the past few years, including heavy debts from funding new high-speed lines, waste and fraud. The government has pledged to open the rail industry to private investment in a big way.

The ministry suffered a major blow to its image when 40 people were killed in a crash between two high-speed trains in 2011.

Liu's case drew a lot of attention when it first broke, but has been overshadowed by the much more sensational case of the former party chief of Chongqing, the ambitious Bo Xilai.

Bo's downfall last year, amid lurid accusations of murder and diplomatic intrigue, caused division and uncertainty as the party prepared to transfer power to a new generation of leaders.

The government has yet to announce a trial date for Bo, or the charges he will face.
