by Ban133 - 9/26/12 7:46 AM
Hello,
I am looking for a program that would allow me to adjust the volume of different applications (and master) using hotkeys (+mouse wheel) in Windows XP.
A few programs come close, but either don't have application control or don't support hotkeys.
If anybody knows of such a program please share,
Thank you!

The most contentious element of the massive Ulster Covenant centenary parade passed off peacefully in city centre Belfast today.
As some 30,000 marchers make their way from Belfast City Hall to Stormont, there was relief that the feeder parade past St Patrick's Catholic Church was trouble-free this morning.
The parade could rank as one of biggest seen in Ireland in decades. Feeder parades started arriving in Belfast city centre around 10 am while the 6-mile parade from Belfast City Hall to Stormont kicked off around 11 am.
The first band and group of Orangemen arrived at the Stormont estate about 12.50 pm but even then bands were still queuing up at Sandy Row preparing to start their long march.
At 3 pm four hours after the main parade began the last of the bands and loyal order members were leaving the city centre for Stormont.
Over 200 bands are leading some 20,000 Orange Order members and members of other loyal institutions such as the Apprentice Boys and the Royal black Institution in the parade. A number of participants in the parades are wearing period costume.
Sectarian actions by loyalist bands members during the summer outside St Patrick's Church on Donegall Street raised concerns about this morning's parade by the church. The parade however featuring 2,000 Orangemen and other loyal order members and about a dozen loyalist bands was free of violence.
In accordance with a Parades Commission ruling about 150 local nationalists protested peacefully outside the church as the parade went by. The bands also observed the ruling that only sacred music be played past the church.
There were complaints by local nationalists that while the letter of the ruling in relation to music may have been observed the spirit of the determination was not - that some of the bands acted "provocatively".
Some of the bands drummed very loudly while one drummer in particular assertively pranced about while playing at the church.
Frank Dempsey, chairman of the local nationalist Carrick Hill Concerned Residents group accused at least one of the bands of breaching the commission ruling by playing The Sash shortly after passing the church.
He also said the "dancing drummer" showed disrespect while some of the drumming was "provocative". Referring to concerns about the return parade past the church this evening he said, "Overall this morning was peaceful but we wait now with baited breath for when they come back."
Mr Dempsey said the Orange Order should talk to the residents' group. "We are confident that this problem can be resolved through dialogue," he said.
St Patrick's administrator the Rev Michael Sheehan said, "I am glad it went off peacefully. The residents acted very well; the Orangemen marched with dignity down the road." He said some of the bands seemed "quite exuberant" which some local people found insulting. "There were some hymns that I never heard played with such drums accompaniment."
The way to resolve differences was through dialogue between the loyal orders and the residents group, he added.

hat Is Long-Term Care Insurance?
Long-term care insurance is exactly what it sounds; this kind of policy covers expenses that are associated with the long-term care of elderly individuals. Oftentimes, the assistance of home care professionals is necessary for an elderly individual to continue aging in place. For this reason, families may decide to call in the services of senior care providers, who assist with daily activities. These activities range from one case to another, but many times encompass grooming, dressing, eating, etc.
While the benefits associated with long-term care insurance vary from one plan to the next, this is the kind of assistance that the plan will, generally, cover.
What Should Your Family Look for in a Policy?
As with any form of insurance, long-term care insurance policies change from one company to the next. Likewise, insurance companies may offer a variety of plans to better meet the needs of a wider range of families. The best thing to do when choosing a policy is to talk with your loved one???s doctor to determine what to anticipate in terms of care. Next, schedule a meeting with an insurance professional to discuss the options available.
Collecting the Benefits of a Long-Term Care Policy
Another topic to discuss with your insurance professional is how to collect the benefits that the policy has to offer. The insurance company your family chooses may require you to submit claims on your own or it may work directly with home care providers. Ask your insurance professional exactly how claims are handled and if you will need to personally do anything to ensure that the benefits are dispersed.
The home care professionals of Always Best Care of Alamance know that long-term care insurance is an important part of a family???s financial plan. They encourage you to talk to your insurance provider about the policy options that are available to your elderly loved one.

TORONTO (Reuters) - The benchmark Canadian stock index fell on Friday, stung by anxiety about Spain's troubled banks and global economic frailty, but Research In Motion Ltd
The resource-rich index closed out the third quarter with a gain of more than 6 percent, as energy companies and miners benefited from a strong showing in crude and bullion prices.
But gloom prevailed on Friday, as Spain's borrowing costs rose back above 6 percent despite an austere budget and business activity in the U.S. Midwest shrank for the first time in three years, the latest in a string of U.S. data.
"Spain is flaring up again," said John Kinsey, a portfolio manager at Caldwell Securities. "The economic numbers from wherever you want to draw them aren't very good."
The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> lost 21.39 points, or 0.17 percent, to close at 12,317.46, with energy and financial stocks weighing.

The most upbeat storyline belonged to RIM, whose shares jumped 8 percent to C$7.52 after the beleaguered BlackBerry maker surprised investors with a smaller-than-anticipated loss and a revenue beat thanks to strong BlackBerry sales in emerging markets such as Indonesia and India.
That optimism could yet prove to be short-lived.
"People had such low expectations and they beat it substantially," said Paul Harris, portfolio manager at Avenue Investment Management. "It's still a show-me stock."
There was otherwise little in corporate news for investors to get their teeth into, and the near-term horizon was just as bare.
"We're in a lull here, we've got two weeks before earnings for the third quarter start," Kinsey said. "There's a lot of noise out there and a lot of people are tired of it."

HARTFORD ? Although many young boys experience emotional and behavioral problems that often result in school and social issues,?African American and Latino males are half as likely to receive mental health services compared to non-Hispanic white youth.
In Connecticut, state officials and local health agencies will address that issue by first releasing a report at?Connecticut State Capitol,? Judiciary Room from 3: 30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Connecticut Association of School Based Health??staff, supporters, advocates, educators, legislators, funders, students and parents will review ?key findings and recommendations from their 18-month research study, which investigated the use of mental health services among adolescent African American and Latino males in school-based health center settings.
Researchers will also share findings to help inform decisions of state and federal policy-makers who may struggle with questions around shrinking state resources, improving health outcomes and reducing incarceration rates for males of color. They also will share findings about barriers, such as access, perceptions and stigma, etc. that get in the way of the males? use of mental health services, and will share policy recomm
The Connecticut Association of School Based Health Centers partnered with the University of Connecticut School of Nursing and the Institute for Community Research to conduct the research with funding from the Connecticut Health Foundation and the Perrin Family Foundation.? The study found that:

Discussing whether investors are underestimating Research in Motion, with Daniel Ernst, Hudson Square Research, and Todd Haselton, TechnoBuffalo.
By NBC News and wire reports
Shares of Research In Motion (RIM), maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, rose 7 percent to just above $7 Wednesday as investors bet the company's fortunes are starting to improve.
The struggling Canadian company is due to issue its quarterly results on Thursday and analysts had expected RIM to start losing subscribers for the first time in its history.
Instead, RIM announced at a developer event on Tuesday that its subscriber base had grown by 2 million in the quarter that ended Sept. 1. RIM also cheered investors by disclosing that its new devices will go on sale in early 2013.
RIM revolutionized the mobile industry with the once-ubiquitous BlackBerry. It is racing against time as it tries to launch a new line of smart phones while struggling to remain afloat.
Shares of RIM are down 90 percent since hitting a recent peak in February 2011.
A one-time darling of Canada?s technology industry, the company has faced declining market share and revenue in recent years as Apple?s iPhone, and smartphones that run Google?s Android software, have gained popularity.
The Canadian company is pinning its recovery hopes on the launch of the Blackberry 10 -- the next-generation mobile platform that will power a suite of new smartphones and is due for release in the first quarter of 2013.
RIM?s Chief Executive Thorsten Heins offered a preview of the devices to developers at an event on Tuesday in San Jose, Calif. TD Securities analyst Scott Penner, who was at the event, said the devices received a generally positive reception.
Reuters contributed to this report.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Barnes & Noble is rolling out two new versions of its Nook tablet with sleek new hardware and a sharper high-definition screen. The bookseller's move heightens the already intense tablet wars heading into the holiday season.
Barnes & Noble said Wednesday that its new Nook HD will come in two sizes, one with a 7-inch screen (measured diagonally), starting at $199, and one with a new 9-inch diagonal screen, called the Nook HD+, starting at $269.
In addition to the new HD screen and a lighter body, Barnes & Noble is also increasing the services the Nook offers, adding a video purchase and rental service, allowing users to maintain different "profiles" and making it easier to browse titles in its book and magazine stores.
New York-based Barnes & Noble, the largest traditional U.S. bookseller, has invested heavily in its Nook e-reader and e-books. In its most recent fiscal quarter, sales of digital content surged 46 percent, but revenue from devices dropped partly due to lower prices. Nook prices in the May-July period were about 23 percent lower than a year ago.
The company is seeking to offset tough competition from online retailers such as Amazon.com, as consumers increasingly move away from traditional books and DVDs to electronic books and streaming video.
The Nook HD is an upgrade to the hardware and services offered by its previous tablets, the Nook Tablet and Nook Color, which Barnes & Noble is phasing out. The company will continue to sell its smaller black-and-white e-reader, called the Nook Simple Touch, for $99, and a backlit Nook Simple Touch for $139. The Nook HD runs on Google's Android 4.0 system and includes Barnes & Noble's own app store and browser.
Tablets are ?once again? expected to be hot items this holiday. The new Nooks come on the heels of Amazon.com's announcement earlier this month that it will offer four new varieties of its Kindle, including a high definition version of its Kindle Fire tablet with an 8.9-inch diagonal screen, which starts at $299. That compares with Apple Inc.'s iPad with a 9.7-inch diagonal screen and $499 starting price.
Apple's iPad is the most popular tablet, and that is not expected to change. Seven out of every 10 tablets sold in the second quarter were iPads, according to IHS iSuppli. Meanwhile Amazon.com has a 4.2 percent share of the tablet market, while Barnes & Noble has a 1.9 percent share, according to iSuppli.
Even so, the category is growing rapidly. An estimated 112.5 million Americans, one-third of U.S. adults, are expected to have tablets by 2016, according to Forrester Research.
And tablet makers are jockeying to gain share on Apple. On specs alone, the new Nook presents a tough choice for consumers seeking a cheap option to the iPad this holiday, analysts say. The 7-inch Nook HD is slightly lighter and narrower, with a sharper display than the similarly priced 7-inch Kindle Fire.
"If the decision the consumer is making is whether to buy based on hardware, these new Nooks will beat out Amazon," said Forrester analyst James McQuivey. "But that's not the decision every consumer is going to make ? hardware is only as good as the services the hardware enables."
So far, Amazon offers more services, McQuivey said, with a bigger app store, and more extensive video library, not to mention Amazon's vast product offerings and its Amazon Prime free-shipping service.
In an attempt to measure up, Barnes & Noble is launching a video service this fall that lets users buy and watch movies and TV shows on their mobile devices and televisions. The offerings will come from major studios including HBO, Sony Pictures, Viacom and Warner Brothers. Scrapbook and catalog browsing features have also been added.
One wild card working in Barnes & Noble's favor this holiday: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target, increasingly threatened by Amazon's online retail operations, won't carry the Kindle. The retailers will sell Barnes & Noble's Nooks, as well as other tablets like the iPad.
"This is going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next year," McQuivey said.
The new Nooks are available for pre-order online and in stores beginning on Wednesday and will begin shipping in late October and begin arriving in stores in early November.

Rachel Carson?s work and legacy are being actively assessed at the moment, given that her landmark book, ?Silent Spring,? was published 50 years ago this week.
A good starting point is??How ?Silent Spring? Ignited the Environmental Movement,? a fascinating feature by Eliza Griswold in last Sunday?s New York Times Magazine. And of course there?s ?On a Farther Shore: The Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson,? the new book by William Souder (I?m reading it now; here?s the Times review). If you?re in the Boston area, I?ll be on a panel at Harvard University later today with the author and climate campaigner Bill McKibben and Frances Beinecke, the president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, to discuss the book in the broader context of science and environmental advocacy.
But of all the fresh considerations of Carson?s work, there?s one that stands out for me at the moment ? a recent paper by two researchers of rhetoric and writing who dug in on ?Silent Spring? drafts, notes and revisions and found that Carson had a remarkable and rare trait for someone so committed to raising public concern about a pressing environmental issue. Rather than downplay scientific uncertainty and gaps in understanding, she progressively amplified what was unclear about the human impacts of DDT and other synthetic compounds on humans and wildlife.
The authors, Kenny Walker, a doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona, and Lynda Walsh,?an assistant professor of English at the University of Nevada, Reno, describe how surprised they were by this pattern, given a large body of work, including ?Merchants of Doubt,? the book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, showing that inflating uncertainty has mainly been the task of industry-backed efforts to blunt public concern and policy.
With Carson?s approach to conveying risk, they write, she appears to have created ?a bridge across the is?ought divide in science-related policy making, using the uncertainty topos to invite the public to participate by supplying fears and values that would warrant proposals for limiting pesticide use.?
This stands in stark contrast to the ?Be Worried? approach that some have tried (in vain) on global warming over the years. Mind you, Carson?s book has plenty of passages, from beginning to end, warning powerfully of the ?grim specter? of a poisoned future.
But this look inside Carson?s five-year writing process shows an approach to conveying risk that seems relatively rare in environmental messaging these days. [9:09 a.m. | Updated | William Souder offered an invaluable reflection on the paper after reading my post, which you can read in full below.]
I invited Walker, whom I met while visiting the University of Arizona in January, to write a ?Your Dot? post describing what he and Walsh found in researching the paper,???No One Yet Knows What the Ultimate Consequences May Be? ? How Rachel Carson Transformed Scientific Uncertainty Into a Site for Public Participation in?Silent Spring??(published in January in the Journal of Business and Technical Communication). Here?s his essay:?
Kenny Walker on Rachel Carson?s use of uncertainty to raise public concerns about DDT:?
The 50th year anniversary of ?Silent Spring? invites reflection not just on the book, but on how we have paid attention to it for half a century. We tend to celebrate ?Silent Spring? from the moment of publication forward, and this tendency ignores the rich history before publication?the five-year long process of meticulous research, writing, and rewriting. We tend to forget that ?Silent Spring? did not just arise from Rachel Carson?s head fully formed. It was part of an ongoing conversation about the uncertainties of life in the postwar period. If we focus on the process behind ?Silent Spring,? and not just the product, what lessons might we learn about the strategies Carson used to enter the conversation and frame the scientific debate around toxic chemicals?
In a study published last January, Dr. Lynda Walsh, an associate professor of English at the University of Nevada, Reno, and I sought to answer this question by researching Carson?s composing process, with a particular focus on the crucial topic of uncertainty. We defined uncertainty as both ignorance (we do not know) and risk (a probability distribution of likely outcomes), and identified 33 places in ?Silent Spring? where Carson expressed uncertainty. I then went to the Carson Papers archive at the Beinecke Library at Yale University to examine her sources, and her drafting process at these 33 locations. What I found was that not only did Carson underline, circle, and annotate her sources with particular attention to uncertainty, she amplified its use in later drafts. Sitting there at the archives, I witnessed where and when Carson crossed out entire sections, and inserted expressions of ignorance and risk in order to frame her carefully selected case studies. In our paper we argued that Carson adapted and adopted uncertainty from her sources and deliberately used it to provide a site for public participation in scientific debates.
For example, chapter 3 is titled ?Elixirs of Death.? In an early draft of one section, she tells us about the storage and accumulation of DDT in the human body, and how even small amounts have been shown to cause acute liver poisoning. She ends this section by telling us: ?There has been no such parallel situation in medical history. We have some intimations as to what the ultimate consequences may be, but it is too early to know the full story.? Here she gives her readers some basic facts about DDT, and then claims ignorance: ?[I]t is too early to know what will happen.? But the final version foregrounds uncertainty, ??Scientists do not agree upon how much DDT can be stored in the human body,?? and ends with a double dose of uncertainty as ignorance and risk: ?All these facts . . . caused Food and Drug Administration scientists to declare as early as 1950 that it is ?extremely likely the potential hazard of DDT had been underestimated.? There has been no such parallel situation in medical history. No one yet knows what the ultimate consequences may be.?
These revisions are one example of a strategy we saw Carson use consistently: Add uncertainty at the level of ignorance to destabilize the science, then articulate the harms, hazards, or consequences behind our current actions, and drive it home with a visceral image of risk (which she does in this example through images of liver damage, the accumulation of DDT in milk and butter, and the ability of toxic chemicals to pass to breast-fed human infants, and to a fetus in utero). Other revisions from certainty to uncertainty show up in her direct quotes from soil scientists, and in a section about estrogen and uterine cancer. Only in her last draft does she add: ?Although medical opinion is divided on the question, much evidence exists to support the view that similar effects may occur in human tissues.? These additions connect to her general thesis about ignorance and risk: ?I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm.?
Carson?s choice to deliberately increase her use of uncertainty in ?Silent Spring? came as a bit of surprise since in the well documented cases of tobacco, acid rain, and global warming, it was the skeptic?s strategy to amplify doubt, not the scientist?s. In Carson we saw a counter-example: her composing process suggested that uncertainty is a crucial site for public participation and precautionary action. Uncertainty?s ability to disrupt knowledge (?we don?t know?) and actualize risk (?potential for harm?) gave the public a place to draw their own inferences, make their own evaluations, assert their right to know the potential hazards they face, and to motivate policy action. Uncertainty provided the readers of ?Silent Spring? a clearly defined role in an otherwise inaccessible scientific controversy. Uncertainty shaped the promise of Carson?s book: to let the public decide for themselves.
Of course, I am not claiming that Carson?s use of uncertainty is the cause behind the success of ?Silent Spring.? But if you take the same strategy and follow the reception of uncertainty through the media, such as the CBS broadcast on ?Silent Spring,? and in the President?s Science Advisory Committee policy documents, in Carson?s testimony before Congress, and in the E.P.A.?s ban on DDT, you can witness the same strategy to assert ignorance and risk, and use visceral images to transform scientific uncertainty into a political certainty.
One of the primary lessons 50 years after the publication of ?Silent Spring? is that expressing uncertainty is not just a skeptic?s position. Uncertainty is a way to manage scientific ethos and provide grounds for the public to participate in scientific controversies. Strategically managing uncertainty offers scientists a way to appear trustworthy, protect against bias, and assert their practical wisdom, moral virtue, and goodwill toward the audience. Scientists need to make it a habit to express uncertainty skillfully. They must do so in ways that provide an accurate assessment of choice in the face of our perpetual ignorance, and our inevitable uncertainties.
In a followup exchange after he sent his piece, Walker provided what I think is a valuable capping thought:
If you can be accurate yet still use uncertainty to frame the impact, you?re not only trustworthy, you?re interesting, and you effectively shape the terms of debate. We?ve all got to stop ignoring uncertainty, and instead learn to manage it. Fifty years later, I think that?s one of the primary lessons of ?Silent Spring.?
William Souder, the author of ?On a Farther Shore,? sent this invaluable note this morning:
This is an illuminating and important study of ?Silent Spring? and how Rachel Carson understood and deployed scientific uncertainty in making her arguments in the book?which turns 50 on this very day. And the conclusions reached by these authors make sense in light of Carson?s approach. A relentless reviser, Carson also depended in all of her books on a vast network of experts, scientists, scholars, and physicians who reviewed and commented on her work in progress. Carson listened to these reviewers.
This was particularly true in the section of ?Silent Spring? dealing with cancer, which Carson re-wrote several times, in the process moderated her claims of a link between pesticides and the disease in part on the advice of her own oncologist (Carson was being treated for the breast cancer that eventually ended her life at 56).
I also think the authors of this study offer wise advice to those of us writing today about issues like climate change: Rather than cede the useful concept of uncertainty to those who would deny scientific consensus, we?d do better to embrace and explore uncertainty for what it is?a valuable and inevitable part of scientific discovery.
One more thing that makes this study of Carson?s approach so fascinating is that I think you have to try to imagine the context Carson was working in in the late 1950s/early 1960s. The idea of chemicals contaminating what Carson called ?the total environment? was novel at the time. And it was her recognition of an exact parallel with the steady rain of fallout from nuclear testing that helped her explain what we knew?and didn?t know?about the consequences and potential collateral damage from heedless tampering with global ecosystems. It?s no accident that Baby Boomers became the vanguard of the environmental movement. They grew up drilling for Armageddon (?Duck and Cover?), and when they read Silent Spring they GOT IT.

One of the difficulties faced by anti-marriage pro-discrimination advocates in their attempt to argue that the law should discriminate against same-sex couples in marriage law because ?marriage should be limited to those who can procreate? is that even a cursory examination of marriage as understood and practised throughout the world today would throw up many, many childless married couples for whom not having children turned out not to make their marriages meaningless after all.
So they have to try to find a way to distinguish between these childless but married heterosexual couples and childless but MUST NOT BE MARRIED homosexual couples.
And one superficially-appealing way of doing that is by talking about the ?kind of relationships? that produce children. Trying to define a broad category so you can ignore the contradictory examples as outliers.
On closer inspection, it doesn?t work at all.
First, it doesn?t explain how it is that we don?t bat an eyelid at childless marriages, which you?d think we would if child-production and child-rearing were an essential element of marriage. Are these marriages real marriages or not? If they are real marriages, then there must be more to marriage than children and the absence of children can?t possibly be a ground to prevent other couples from marrying. If they are not real marriages, then where?s your proposal for the law to start insisting on fertility licences?
(It?s like the polygamy thing ? if you?ve seriously got a polygamous proposal in mind, people who keep raising it in order to avoid discussing gay marriage specifically, put it up for us to assess. Because by asserting one ?must? follow the other, the slippery slope assumes there?s no significant difference between the proposals, that there are no big problems with polygamy not present in gay marriage. If there are, then we could easily have one and not the other. If there aren?t, then those problems must be present in the gay marriage proposal, in which case COULD YOU TELL US WHAT THEY ARE? If you have to raise polygamy, then the clear implication is that the problems are NOT present in same-sex marriage, and therefore would be a reason to block polygamy even after we pass same-sex marriage. Which of course is why anti-equality advocates will never actually specify what is wrong with the polygamous proposal they imagine ? because it would immediately demonstrate why it?s fundamentally different from gay marriage, and implode their ?slippery slope? assertion that it ?must? follow it. Like the ?childbearing is an essential part of marriage? line, the ?polygamy will follow gay marriage? assertion isn?t a real argument the people raising it genuinely believe ? it?s just there to muddy the waters.)
Secondly, the level at which you draw your ?kind of? general category is completely arbitrary. Maybe this Venn diagram will help:
You can say that each of those categories, at different levels of specificity, are ?the kind of relationships that produce children?. But it?s entirely arbitrary to draw it at any one level. If you?re going to accept relationships that don?t produce children ? which by extending marriage beyond the smallest pink circle you already are ? then why stop at the level of gender? If you?re going to include marriages where the participants refuse to have children, and then above that the broader category of marriages where the couples are infertile, then why not include same-sex couples where the couples are infertile?
If child-rearing is an essential element of marriage, then what is the justification for arbitrarily drawing the line at one of these levels and not another?
The anti-equality anti-marriage people have no answer to that, because they aren?t trying to make marriage more about children, they?re not trying to discourage infertile people from marrying unless they?re gay, and they?re not trying to encourage couples with children (which includes gay people) to get married. They are simply looking for plausible-sounding excuses to justify discrimination against gay people they really want for much baser reasons they can?t describe in public.

Protestors march to the parliament against austerity measures announced by the Spanish government, in Madrid, Spain, Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012. Spain's Parliament has taken on the appearance of a heavily guarded fortress with dozens of police blocking access from every possible angle, hours ahead of a protest against the conservative government's handling of the economic crisis. The demonstration, organized behind the slogan 'Occupy Congress,' is expected to draw thousands of people. It is due to start around 1730 GMT Tuesday. Madrid authorities said some 1,300 police would be deployed. MADRID (AP) ? Spain's government was hit by the country's financial crisis on two fronts Tuesday as protestors enraged with austerity cutbacks and tax hikes clashed with police near Parliament while the nation's borrowing costs increased in an auction of its debt.
More than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the Parliament building in the heart of Madrid, forcing most protesters to crowd nearby avenues and shutting down traffic at the height of the evening rush hour.
Police used batons to push back some protesters at the front of the march attended by an estimated 6,000 people as tempers flared, and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles toward authorities.
Television images showed officers beating protesters in response, and an Associated Press television producer saw five people dragged away by police and two protesters bloodied. Spanish state TV said at least 28 were injured, including two officers, and that 22 people were detained.
The demonstration, organized with an "Occupy Congress" slogan, drew protesters from all walks of life weary of nine straight months of painful economic austerity measures imposed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his solid majority of lawmakers. Smaller demonstrations Tuesday attracted hundreds of protesters in Barcelona and Seville.
Angry Madrid marchers who got as close as they could to Parliament, 250 meters (yards) away, yelled "Get out!, Get out! They don't represent us! Fire them!"
"The only solution is that we should put everyone in Parliament out on the street so they know what it's like," said Maria Pilar Lopez, a 60-year-old government secretary.
Lopez and others called for fresh elections, claiming the government's hard-hitting austerity measures are proof that the ruling Popular Party misled voters when it won power last November in a landslide.
While Rajoy has said he has no plans to cut pensions for Spaniards, Lopez fears her retirement age could be raised from 65 to as much as 70. Three of her seven nieces and nephews have been laid off since Rajoy ousted Spain's Socialists, and she said the prospect of them finding jobs "is very bleak."
Spain is struggling in its second recession in three years with unemployment near 25 percent. The country has introduced austerity measures and economic reforms in a bid to convince its euro partners and investors that it is serious about reducing its bloated deficit to 6.3 percent of gross domestic product in 2012 and 4.5 percent next year.
The deficit reached ?50.1 billion ($64.8 billion), equivalent to 4.77 percent of GDP, through August, the government said Tuesday. Secretary of State for the Budget Marta Fernandez Curras said the deficit "is under control."
Spain has been under pressure from investors to apply for European Central Bank assistance in keeping its borrowing costs down. Rajoy has yet to say whether Madrid will apply for the aid, reluctant to ask since such assistance comes with strings attached.
Concerns over the country's public finances were evident earlier Wednesday when the Treasury sold ?3.98 billion ($5.14 billion) in short-term debt but at a higher cost. It sold ?1.39 billion in three-month bills at an average interest rate of 1.2 percent, up from 0.95 percent in the last such auction Aug. 28, and ?2.58 billion in six-month bills on a yield of 2.21 percent, up from 2.03 percent.
The government is expected to present a new batch of reforms Thursday as it unveils a draft budget for 2013.
A day later, an auditor will release the results of stress tests on those Spanish banks, which have been hit by the collapse of the country's real estate sector. The government will then judge how much of a ?100 billion loan it will tap to help bail out the banks. Initial estimates say the banks will need some ?60 billion.

Weather 2x is an iPhone and iPad app that will make even the worst of weather conditions look amazing -- especially on the iPhone 5's new display. The information provided by Weather 2x includes the current condition and a 5-day forecast that can be broken up into 3-hour intervals. Weather 2x does not include in-depth details about the weather, like radars, but rather focuses on bringing the most important information to you in an elegant and beautiful package.
The main screen of Weather 2x will show a photo that represents the current weather conditions at the location you are viewing. These photos are absolutely stunning and really make Weather 2x a joy to look at. Elegantly placed over the photo, you'll see the current temperature, city, time, and a small description about the current weather, like "Clear/Sunny" or "Cloudy". If you tap the screen once, the little description will be replaced with a row of new information: precipitation, visibility, humidity, pressure level details, and wind speed and direction.
A double-tap to the screen will bring up the 5-day forecast. On the iPhone, the forecast will slide up from the bottom, and on the iPad, it will part open a section of the bottom of the screen to reveal itself. On the iPhone, you can also slide the screen up, instead of double-tapping, to bring up the 5-day forecast if you prefer. For each day, Weather 2x will show an icon that represents the weather and the anticipated high and low.
To see the forecast over the next 5 days in 3-hour intervals, slide the screen over to the left for a scrollable list. For each interval, you'll see an icon and the forecasted temperature.
If you slide the screen to right, you'll see a list of all the places you've saved and all their current weather conditions. To delete a city, hold your finger down on it to put it in "jiggly" mode, then hit the x to delete. You can also rearrange your locations when they're in jiggly mode.
The Settings screen is where you go to switch to the metric system or 24-hour time as well as enable sound effects, iCloud sync, local weather, and the time.
Weather 2x is an absolutely gorgeous weather app for both the iPhone and iPad -- the best I've seen. The included gestures are perfect and intuitive and the information is displayed and organized in a very elegant manner. If you're in the market for a beautiful weather app for your iPhone or iPad or both (with iCloud sync!), do not pass this one up.
