Adopting the Adopted - Adoption.com Forums

My DD1 had a disrupted adoption. The adoption was never finalised, she lived with them for 9/10 months, but they couldn't cope with her. I adopted her about a year and a half later. I don't blame the couple, they didn't do anything wrong, I absolutely understand why they couldn't cope. I do blame SS, who should never have placed her with them in the first place

Video: Nanodevice manufacturing strategy using DNA 'building blocks'

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have developed a method for building complex nanostructures out of short synthetic strands of DNA. Called single-stranded tiles (SSTs), these interlocking DNA "building blocks," akin to Legos?, can be programmed to assemble themselves into precisely designed shapes, such as letters and emoticons. Further development of the technology could enable the creation of new nanoscale devices, such as those that deliver drugs directly to disease sites.

The technology, which is described in today's online issue of Nature, was developed by a research team led by Wyss core faculty member Peng Yin, Ph.D., who is also an Assistant Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. Other team members included Wyss Postdoctoral Fellow Bryan Wei, Ph.D., and graduate student Mingjie Dai.

DNA is best known as a keeper of genetic information. But in an emerging field of science known as DNA nanotechnology, it is being explored for use as a material with which to build tiny, programmable structures for diverse applications. To date, most research has focused on the use of a single long biological strand of DNA, which acts as a backbone along which smaller strands bind to its many different segments, to create shapes. This method, called DNA origami, is also being pursued at the Wyss Institute under the leadership of Core Faculty member William Shih, Ph.D. Shih is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Cancer Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

In focusing on the use of short strands of synthetic DNA and avoiding the long scaffold strand, Yin's team developed an alternative building method. Each SST is a single, short strand of DNA. One tile will interlock with another tile, if it has a complementary sequence of DNA. If there are no complementary matches, the blocks do not connect. In this way, a collection of tiles can assemble itself into specific, predetermined shapes through a series of interlocking local connections.

In demonstrating the method, the researchers created just over one hundred different designs, including Chinese characters, numbers, and fonts, using hundreds of tiles for a single structure of 100 nanometers (billionths of a meter) in size. The approach is simple, robust, and versatile.

As synthetically based materials, the SSTs could have some important applications in medicine. SSTs could organize themselves into drug-delivery machines that maintain their structural integrity until they reach specific cell targets, and because they are synthetic, can be made highly biocompatible.

"Use of DNA nanotechnology to create programmable nanodevices is an important focus at the Wyss Institute, because we believe so strongly in its potential to produce a paradigm-shifting approach to development of new diagnostics and therapeutics," said Wyss Founding Director, Donald Ingber, M.D., Ph.D.

Living Wills Determine Who Will Make Choices When You Cannot

This article has been viewed 9 times.

Many people are questioning what they want in the way in which of legal paperwork to make sure that, within the event of incapacity, their needs are identified and adopted relating to potential finish-of-life decisions. Advance directives are a set of documents which are used to put out a clear chain of command to present selections makers steerage as to the individual?s needs as they relate to the kind of care desired in a disaster . It is a way to direct the decision maker about what a person wants and does not want, should they be unable to make their needs clear.

A LIVING WILL IS AN ADVANCE DIRECTIVE

Not like Wills, which cope with matters after the demise of an individual, advance directives are often put to use before an individual dies, and they are crucial a part of the estate planning process. The three most typical advance directives that are typically drafted are a power of attorney for monetary choices, an influence of lawyer for well being care and a Residing Will.

A power of attorney for financial choices names a person to deal with monetary matters on behalf of one other individual. A financial power of legal professional can be very broad in the power that it confers on a person to make serious selections relating to a principal?s assets.

A power of lawyer for well being care is similar in some methods to the power of lawyer for monetary selections in that it additionally names a person to make decisions on behalf of someone else.

When executing a power of lawyer for health care, an individual answers several questions in an try to make clearly precisely what kind of remedy they want, based mostly on their medical condition.

A LIVING WILL AND A POWER OF ATTORNEY

A Living Will, in some methods duplicates the knowledge within the power of attorney for well being care, however in contrast to the power of attorney, which can also cover conditions in which a person might recover but needs someone to make their medical decisions for a time, a Living Will is just a directive stating that an individual doesn?t need ?heroic measures? to keep them alive when there is no reasonable prospect of any meaningful recovery.

It is more necessary to give your loved ones the instruments they should cope with your incapacity (and even your passing) with the boldness that they?re fulfilling your wishes.

Ya Weilin Dead: Father Of Slain Tiananmen Protester Commits Suicide

BEIJING ? The father of a man killed in the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown has hanged himself after two decades of failed attempts to seek government redress.

A support group for parents of the crackdown's victims said Monday that 73-year-old Ya Weilin's body was found in an unused underground parking garage below his residential complex.

Zhang Xianling, a member of the group, says Ya killed himself out of despair and to protest the government's long-standing refusal to address the grievances of the victims' relatives.

His death comes about a week ahead of the anniversary of the night of June 3-4, 1989, when the military crushed the weekslong, student-led protests, possibly killing thousands of students, activists and ordinary citizens.

Halladay's sore shoulder not new

After leaving Sunday?s game after two innings due to a sore shoulder, Roy Halladay said the pain dates back to Tuesday?s outing, a loss to the Nationals.

Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee, however, admitted it went back further than that.

?Yeah, it?s been an issue,? Dubee said. ?It?s been there. It?s been lingering. Some days it?s better than others. Chicago [May 17] was better than others. Even the start of last game it was better and then got it cranky. Today, warming up, he felt fine, but as he got into the game and sat down and even before the first inning, it was just hard to get it going again.?

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com has the full rundown, including some Roy Oswalt speculation, and it?s well worth checking out. For sure, it seems doubtful that Halladay will make his next start, and a 15-day DL stint would seem to be in the cards even if Halladay is likely to fight it.

Why People Stick with Cancer Screening, Even When It Causes Harm

When it comes to complex medical decisions, cold hard statistics may hold little sway over patients in the face of a single, compelling anecdote.

Getty Images

Getty Images

Prostate cancer cell

The data on PSA testing to detect prostate cancer has long been shaky ? so much so that the discoverer of PSA (or prostate-specific antigen, an enzyme made by the prostate) himself decried the test two years ago as ?hardly more effective than a coin toss.?

He characterized the widespread use of the cancer-screening tool as ?a hugely expensive public health disaster.? This week, the U.S. National Preventive Services Task Force concurred, officially recommending against PSA screening for all healthy men of any age.

So why do people ? particularly cancer patients and their advocates ? continue to support the routine use of ineffective tests? In the case of PSA tests, positive results often lead to unnecessary and painful biopsies and the treatment of tumors that would never have harmed the patient anyway, further leading to side effects like infection, incontinence, impotence, even death.

(MORE: Prostate Cancer Screening: What You Need to Know)

Similarly, why do women resist recommendations to scale back routine breast cancer screening with mammography, when doing so would reduce their risk of unnecessary and painful interventions and treatments?

A new review explores some of the psychological reasons for the resistance, and offers a possible solution. The first reason, say researchers Hal Arkes of Ohio State University and Wolfgang Gaissmaier of the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one that every journalist and medical quack knows well: a good anecdote often trumps even the most overwhelming statistics.

Prostate and breast cancer survivors and their families certainly have compelling stories, which are frequently given intense media attention, particularly when famous people, such as Rudy Guiliani or Warren Buffett, are affected.

(MORE: Warren Buffett?s Prostate Cancer: ?I Feel Great?)

But survivor stories don?t have to involve celebrities to make an impact. ?Most people know someone ? their mailman?s older brother ? who had a positive PSA test and he?s still alive after treatment. So that shows the PSA test saved his life,? explains Arkes.

Research shows repeatedly that while a single story of an individual case will compel people to take action, cold statistics on hundreds of cases may make action less likely. This means that government task force guidelines ? such as those on prostate cancer and breast cancer screening ? based on data on thousands of cases may play less of a role in people?s medical decision-making than their knowledge of one case of someone they know. This is true whether the case represents a rare outcome or a common one.

?If you have a person standing in front of you who says, ?I had my life saved by a PSA test,? that?s powerful. It makes a big impression and hits you right on the retina, whereas if you see some statistic saying this many men had positive PSA tests and false-positive this and that, your eyes glaze over,? says Arkes.

(MORE: When Cancer Screening Does More Harm than Good)

Another reason people adhere to personal experience is that they have a deep-seated need for suffering to be meaningful. So, the more you have suffered or paid for an experience, the more valuable it becomes. The phenomenon applies to minor costs ? research finds that people who paid more for the same dinner describe it as more enjoyable ? as well as major ones. If you have endured surgery, chemo or radiation, and particularly if you have suffered terrible side effects as a result, you are more likely to believe that ? despite what the statistics say ? you were one of the lucky ones for whom treatment was lifesaving. You? re not likely to believe that your pain was unnecessary.

This need for meaning is completely understandable and human, but it, too, can skew decision-making, especially when these stories feature prominently in a debate. Fortunately, there may be a relatively simple way to get around these quirks of human nature and help people make informed choices about complex issues including cancer screening.

(HEALTH SPECIAL: Cancer ? The Screening Dilemma)

The authors of the new study cite previous research that asked people to make hypothetical choices for the treatment of heart disease. The participants were given information showing that one option had a 75% cure rate, while another had a 50% cure rate. They were also told anecdotes about other patients that either represented the data accurately or made it seem like the success rates of both options were equal. People who heard the misleading anecdotes were twice as likely to choose the less successful treatment option.

However, when participants were presented with a graphic representation of the cure rates ? similar to the graphic, below, on outcomes of prostate cancer screening ? they were not as swayed by misleading anecdotes. People tended to choose the more successful treatment option.

Other studies have also suggested that data visualization helps people better understand information, which has led to the development of drug fact boxes based on this principle.

Of course, most people remain terrified of cancer no matter what the data say, and so they may seek screening because it offers some sense of control. Using visual data that ?hits the retina? like an anecdote could help people make critical choices that are actually better for their health.

The research was published in Psychological Science.

Next-gen iPhone expected to sport 16:9 display aspect ratio

The next-generation iPhone?supposedly packing a 4-inch screen, up from 3.5 inches?is now expected to sport a resolution of 640x1136, according to 9to5Mac. In fact, the site claims to have information on multiple next-gen iPhones, though not all of them may see the light of day.

The two prototypes in question are reportedly codenamed N41AP (iPhone 5,1) and N42AP (iPhone 5,2), and both phones have a display that measures 3.95 inches diagonally. (This seems to once again corroborate previous rumors about a 4-inch iPhone?one that Steve Jobs supposedly "worked closely" on before his death in October of 2011.) As some have suspected, 9to5Mac claims the larger-sized screen won't make the device any wider than it already is. Instead, the display will grow in length, from the current resolution of 640x960 to 640x1136. That would leave the display 1.94 inches wide while lengthening it to 3.45 inches, shifting the aspect ratio from the old 3:2 to 16:9.

There has been some debate as to whether iOS developers would welcome 16:9 displays. Reports circulated Monday claiming that some devs were excited about the change, but the ones we spoke to expressed caution about screen ratios changing. Would Apple want every single app in the App Store updated for a 16:9 screen, and would developers have to continue supporting 3:2 apps for older iPhones? Several developers pointed out that apps are already supposed to be able to handle display resolution changes, but some have issues dealing with things at the top of the screen (such as the Personal Hotspot bar), so there is potential for complications. How do you think Apple will handle it, assuming the rumor is true?

Setup an Additional Phone Number on a Android Smartphone or iPhone

Posted on May 27, 2012 at 5:12 am

When you get an iPhone or Android based smartphone, like any other cellphone, you activate the line with a specific phone number. However, what if you want to have an additional phone number for your phone? Using the iPhone?s/Android?s required data plan in combination with an app, you can setup a secondary phone number that will also ring, dial out and video chat for your smartphone.

iPhone Keypad

There are a few different ways to add additional phone numbers to a smartphone. Your wireless carrier may be able to set this up for you, you may able to use call forwarding to receive calls from another phone or landline on your smartphone, and there are even some dedicated services that specialize in adding additional lines to a smartphone.

However, most of these services or plan add-ons cost money, and for how much you will actually use the additional line, it may not be worth it. The following method for adding a second phone number to an iPhone or Android smartphone is free and simple to setup.

To get started, jump to the Google Voice homepage and sign-in to your Google account. Once signed-in, Google will present you with the following prompt:

Google Voice Prompt

Select the option I want a new number. On the next screen, you will be prompted to choose and setup the Google Voice number. Enter your area code, zip code or city and click the Search numbers button.

Choose Google Voice Number

From here, Google will present you with a list of available phone numbers to choose from. Select a phone number you would like to use and click the Continue button.

You will also need to select a pin that will be used to access your voicemail for the new number. Enter a pin number and click the Continue button.

Google Voice Pin

Finally, you will need to enter a forwarding phone number. For this, you can enter your home, work or cell phone number. Most people will simply want to enter their existing smartphone/cell phone number, as this tutorial is based on adding an additional number to a smartphone. Click the Continue button to proceed.

Add a Forwarding Phone Google Voice

Finally, Google will need to verify your phone setup. Click the Call me now button.

Google Verify Voice

Enter the verification code when Google calls you. Once that has been done, your account will be activated. Click the Finish button.

Google Voice Ready

Now that you?ve successfully setup Google Voice, you can test it by simply dialing the number that Google Voice provided for you. From there, it should directly ring your smartphone, home phone or work phone (whatever phone you entered during setup).

Basically, now you have a Google Voice number which is forwarded to the phone number you chose. You can access the phone number and some additional settings from your Google Voice homepage. However, there is still not yet video chat and other features, and when you dial out from your smartphone, it will be your normal number not your Google Voice number. Now, we need to download some apps:

iPhone ? Vtok

Android ? Google Voice

Proceed to download and install one of the above apps, depending whether you have an Android based smartphone or iPhone. Because these apps are Google Voice integrated, they will provide for you an entirely new phone interface, just for your Google Voice number.

Vtok App

Google Voice App

That?s basically all there is to it. If you just want basic call forwarding from your Google Voice number, you do not need to download any apps, simply setup Google Voice.

However, if you want an actual, full-featured additional phone number for your smartphone, download an app, which provides a unique calling, texting and video chat interface just for that specific, additional Google Voice number. Then, you can of course use your iPhone the way you normally would with your default mobile phone number, but also use the Google Voice app for the additional phone number that was setup during this tutorial. Thank you for stopping by the site for today?s post.

China detains official for rapes after online uproar

BEIJING - Police in central China detained Li Xingong, a former Communist Party official, on suspicion or raping underage girls, state media said on Sunday, following an online uproar about the latest case of abuse of power.

The man, who was the party's deputy head in Yongcheng city in Henan province, is accused of assaulting more than ten girls during police interrogations, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

City authorities have "ordered swift and severe punishment on the suspect in accordance with relevant laws", it added.

The case has been widely discussed on China's wildly popular Twitter-like microblogging site Weibo, after reports about the rapes naming him as the perpetrator began circulating online over the past week.

"Officials these days are all like this. It's really terrible," wrote one Weibo user.

"These dog officials are everywhere. Only execution will sate the public's anger," wrote another.

While the government has encouraged people to take to the internet to expose corruption and abuse of power, especially at the grassroots level, it generally keeps a tight rein on what can be said about similar problems with more senior officials.

After briefly allowing free discussion online following March's sacking of former Chongqing party boss Bo Xilai and the naming of his wife as a suspect in the murder of a British businessman, censors moved to block the topic.

The ruling Communist Party has long pushed to eradicate corruption, underscoring a broader fear that, if left unchecked, the problem could hurt the legitimacy of one-party rule and maybe threaten its survival.

Florida: Mack has big lead in Florida GOP primary, ties Nelson; Florida voters stand their ground

May 24, 2012 - Mack Has Big Lead In Florida GOP Primary, Ties Nelson, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Florida Voters Stand Their Ground
Word format

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack holds a wide lead in the race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, getting 40 percent of the vote to 7 percent for former Sen. George LeMieux and 8 percent for Tea party favorite Mike McCalister, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 41 percent are undecided.

A general election matchup is too close to call as Mack gets 42 percent to Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson's 41 percent. Gov. Rick Scott's job approval has risen above 40 percent for the first time, although he still remains underwater with a negative 41 - 46 percent rating from voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds. A majority of registered voters, 56 - 35 percent, support the state's "Stand Your Ground" law that has come under recent scrutiny. Support is 78 - 15 percent among Republicans and 58 - 35 percent among independent voters while Democrats are opposed 59 - 32 percent. Men support "Stand Your Ground" 65 - 31 percent while women support it 48 - 39 percent. Support is 61 - 31 percent among white voters and 53 - 36 percent among Hispanic voters while black voters are opposed 56 - 30 percent. "Although some activists have been critical of Congressman Connie Mack and his campaign, he retains an overwhelming lead in the race for the Republican Senate nomination and is tied with Sen. Bill Nelson," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "It is not clear how the late entrance of former Congressman Dave Weldon into the race will affect the campaign, but Mack's lead is pretty formidable with three months until the primary." Weldon was not included in the names of candidates offered survey respondents because he had not made clear his intention to run when the poll began. The too-close-to-call November Senate matchup compares to Nelson's 44 - 36 percent lead in a March 29 Quinnipiac University poll. Today, Nelson leads LeMieux 43 - 36 percent. Gov. Scott's slight improvement in the public eye is built on a 66 - 22 percent approval rating among Republicans. Disapproval is 74 - 14 percent among Democrats and 45 - 40 percent among independent voters. Scott runs even among men who give him a 46 - 44 percent score, while women turn thumbs down 48 - 36 percent. "Although Gov. Rick Scott's numbers aren't that impressive, they are a step up for him - the first time he has gotten his approval rating out of the 30s since taking office," Brown said. "His best previous score was 50 - 38 percent disapproval in January." The Trayvon Martin shooting has brought the issue of gun control and the state's "Stand Your Ground" law into the public eye. By 51 - 45 percent, voters oppose stricter gun control laws in the state with a huge partisan split and gender gap. Democrats favor stricter gun control 73 - 23 percent, while Republicans oppose the idea 74 - 22 percent. Independent voters oppose stricter gun control 51 - 42 percent. Women want stronger gun control 54 - 41 percent, while men are opposed 62 - 34 percent. "Despite the controversy, public opinion seems to be solidly behind 'Stand Your Ground' and slightly against stricter gun control," said Brown. On one area there was support for more gun control. By 83 - 14 percent, voters don't think even people with concealed weapons permits should be allowed to bring a gun into the State Capitol. By a narrow 49 - 46 percent margin, Florida voters disagree with Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn who wants guns banned from downtown Tampa during the Republican convention. From May 15 - 21, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,722 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 742 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research. Teaching English to Adults

English has undoubtedly, become the latest lingua franca of the world and not only kids, but a lot of adults are also feeling the need to become well ?versed in English. In this age of globalization, it has become imperative for people from different backgrounds and cultures to communicate effectively with each other. This has led to a boom in the English teaching business.

Teaching English to adults is not as easy as it sounds and involves a considerable amount of planning and skill to make it understandable and adaptable to people with different cultures and linguistic backgrounds. In order to teach English, one at least needs to do a diploma course in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). A TEFL diploma trains and helps an individual in taking up a new career as an English teacher.

An English teacher training involves basis training on the modern techniques, skills and methodologies of teaching English language. It comprises of teaching basic English grammar and phonology along with the four language skills (Speaking, listening, reading and writing) and enhancing someone else?s vocabulary. This English teacher training also covers aspects of teaching such as classroom management, trainee psyche, planning lessons and evaluation and management of crisis that may arise in a classroom. A TEFL diploma is a minimum prerequisite to becoming an English teacher.

Various different TEFL certification courses are available these days and an aspirant must know which English teacher training is best suitable for the career one wants to pursue.? For example, if one is interested in teaching business English, he or she must sign up for an advanced TEFL diploma course. Teaching business English is a more specific branch of teaching English to adults because it requires more emphasis on conversational English and on relating to the language in the setting of a corporate world.?

Industries like the IT and BPO sector require their employees to constantly communicate with clients and people all over the world and fluency in English becomes imperative for them. English teachers are consistently hired by these companies to better the communicative skills and soft skills of the employees. Voice and accent trainers are also often employed by these companies. Teaching business English involves planning courses best applicable to the needs of a specific organization. To facilitate maximum participation, the lessons have to be planned and executed in an interesting, interactive and enjoyable fashion but easy to grasp for employees coming from different backgrounds. It is the job of the English trainer to evaluate and ensure that the development in communication skills is at par with the needs and requirements of the organization. In the course of teaching business English, a trainer also focuses on brushing up on the personal skills of the employees to ensure free communication among the various levels within an organization.

Teaching communicative or teaching business English to adults has become a very lucrative career option for many and with the right course and fluency in English, anyone can become an English teacher.
